Roman Safiullin v Nicolas Jarry Head to Head

This will be their first meeting.

Safiullin Qualifies for Main Draw

Roman Safiullin had to play the qualifiers in order to make the main draw of the Madrid Open but he was able to get it done with a pretty decent level. His first win came over Joao Sousa who is a solid player albeit far from his best. The second win he got was Sebastian Ofner who is another solid player.

In both of those matches, Safiulin demonstrated his serve which is a pretty big weapon in Madrid if you utilize it well. Safiullin has been doing that and I expect him to do that against his next opponent as well.

Besides the serve, the Russian is capable of hitting the ball well from either side of the court though his forehand seems a bit more stable. He plays an attacking style but he can also spam errors if you push him hard enough.

He’s 14-11 on the year and 2-2 on clay so far. Nothing spectacular but good enough to win a match or two in the main draw.

Jarry Up and Down After Resurgence

Nicolas Jarry won his first ATP trophy in years at the event in his hometown of Santiago a few weeks ago but since then his play has been largely up and down. The Chilean plays his best tennis on clay but there are differences between European and South American clay.

He’s 18-7 on the year and 13-5 on clay. The style he plays suits Madrid rather well because it will allow his serve to flourish which should give him a boost. Outside of his serve, Jarry primarily uses his forehand to do damage and that’s a very potent strategy as well.

He hasn’t played in Madrid since 2019 and will take some time to adjust but for the most part, it will be rather straightforward. I expect him to keep this match rather close and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a tiebreak or two between these two players.

If the serve works it will be a good match and if the forehand is there on top of that, Jarry will likely win it.

Safiulin v Jarry Prediction and Tip

This is a rather close match because I could see either player really winning it. Jarry is the better player on clay but Safiulin is tricky. I will side with the experience of Jarry though.
