Novak Djokovic has a great chance of overtaking Rafael Nadal in the race to become the most decorated male tennis player of all time this year. 

The leading make him the favourite to win the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. 

He has already clinched 20 Grand Slams throughout his illustrious career: nine Australian Open titles, two French Opens, seven Wimbledon titles and three US Opens. 

That leaves him just one behind all-time leader Nadal, who won last year’s Australian Open and French Open. 

However, the Spanish clay court specialist has struggled with injuries in recent months, and Djokovic has an excellent opportunity to surge clear of him in the all-time stakes. 

Bookmakers are offering 26.0 on Djokovic winning all four Grand Slams this year, which would be a remarkable feat. 

You can alternatively take odds of 4.5 on him winning three Grand Slams, 4.0 on him clinching two, 3.5 on him only winning a single Grand Slam and 2.75 on none.

Can Djokovic Win All Four Grand Slams? 

Only two players have ever completed a Calendar Slam in men’s singles history: Don Budge and Rod Laver. 

Budge pulled it off in 1938, and Australian superstar Laver followed suit by winning the , the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in 1962. 

Both achievements came prior to the Open era, but Laver then repeated the feat in 1969, cementing his status as one of the greatest players in history. 

While he has never won a Calendar Slam, Djokovic has won four consecutive majors: Wimbledon and the US Open in 2015 and then the Australian Open and the French Open in 2016. 

He has also come close to a Calendar Slam on three occasions. In 2011, Djokovic won three majors and reached the semi-finals of the French Open. 

The Serbian superstar then won the same three majors and finished runner-up at the French Open in 2015.  

Finally, he won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in 2021, before suffering a shock defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final. 

Can he finally secure the elusive Calendar Slam in 2023? 

Australian Open

Djokovic deservedly heads Down Under as the odds-on favourite to clinch a 10th Australian Open title this month. 

He is the most dominant player in the tournament’s history, having won 91% of his matches on the hard courts at Melbourne Park. 

He destroyed his rivals in 2019, 2020 and 2021, and he would probably have done so again last year if he had not been deported due to his vaccine status. 

The Serb has now been permitted to return to Australia after his three-year ban was overturned, and he has already beaten Medvedev in a warm-up event. 

He should make short work of his rivals at the tournament, so odds of 1.80 with new betting sites on him lifting the trophy look very appealing. 

Verdict: Winner 

French Open

This has been Djokovic’s weakest tournament over the years, as his game is not particularly well suited to clay surfaces. 

He still boasts an impressive 84% win record at Roland-Garros, but he has only clinched the title twice in 18 attempts. 

The first came in 2016 – his 12th attempt – when he beat Andy Murray in the final, completing a career Grand Slam. 

However, there was always an asterisk against that triumph, as the dominant Nadal had to retire due to injury in the third round. 

There was no such asterisk in 2021, when he before dispatching Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. 

However, Nadal gained revenge by beating Djokovic in the quarter-finals last year, and the Serb is likely to struggle again this time around if he faces Nadal or Carlos Alcaraz. 

He is the 2.75 favourite to win it, but the odds on Nadal and Alcaraz look more attractive right now. 

Verdict: Loses to a clay court specialist 

Wimbledon

Djokovic has not tasted defeat at Wimbledon since he was forced to retire with injury in his quarter-final clash with Tomas Berdych in 2017. 

He won the tournament in 2018 and 2019, and it was cancelled due to the pandemic the following year. 

It returned in 2021, when Djokovic defeated Matteo Berrettini in the final, and he defended his crown when he beat Nick Kyrgios last year. 

That means he is on a 28-match winning streak on the grass courts at SW19, and he looks well priced at 2.20 with to conquer Wimbledon again this year. 

Verdict: Winner

US Open

It is interesting to note that Djokovic has only won three US Open titles during his career, when you consider how strong he is on hard courts. 

He has finished runner-up on six occasions, and he has also crashed out at the semi-final stage three times. 

Djokovic may run out of steam towards the end of the year, as he is now in his mid-30s, and he was outfought by Medvedev in the 2021 final. 

His vaccine status prevented him from competing last year, and he has not won the US Open since 2018. 

Injuries and fatigue may catch up with him by the end of 2023, so there will probably be more value elsewhere in the US Open winner’s market than backing Djokovic at 2.50.

How Many Grand Slams Will Djokovic Win This Year? 

Odds of 4.0 with betting apps on Djokovic winning two Grand Slams this year look tempting, as he could come up short against a genuine clay court specialist at Roland-Garros. 

He is the heavy favourite for the other three majors, but things rarely go to script in elite sport, so there could be the odd mishap along the way. 

As such, Djokovic and Nadal may well end the year on 23 Grand Slams apiece, potentially setting the scene for a final showdown in 2024.
