Eduardo Rodriguez (9-7, 3.21 ERA, 116 K in 117.2 IP) vs. Touki Toussaint (2-6, 4.85 ERA, 58 K in 59.1 IP)
In his only start against the Pale Hose in 2023, E-Rod was brilliant in May, allowing one earned run in six innings, with five strikeouts. The lefty will be facing a different lineup, as Chicago has gutted some of its roster after a failure of a season. The Sox come into this game on a five-game losing streak.
As long as Rodriguez has command of two of his four primary pitches, he should be formidable on Friday. We like him to be a good prop bet for K’s and also as a winner. He’s seeking his 10th victory. The last time a pitcher won as many as 10 games for Detroit was way back in 2017.
Toussaint has had one good outing since late July, and it came against the pitiful Oakland Athletics. The journeyman right-hander has pitched poorly against good lineups. Detroit’s is a marginal lineup, but it performed above average in August, showing off power. Toussaint has surrendered seven home runs in nine starts. He’s also notoriously wild: allowing more than six walks per nine innings. Detroit should have baserunners, and lots of them.
The calendar has flipped to September, and we can look back now on the fine August numbers from Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter. Last month, Tork smacked nine homers and slugged over .560, and Carpenter batted .346 with a .653 SLG and nine homers as well. Those two young Tigers have staked a claim to the middle of the Tigers lineup.
The hottest hitter in the Sox lineup is also the most talented. Yoán Moncada has hit .414 with a 1072 OPS in his last nine games… Andrew Benintendi has three homers and five extra-base hits in his last 10 games… Riley Greene busted out of a 2-for-30 slump with two hits on Thursday. His average plummeted from above .300 before that bad stretch, all the way to .285 as September begins.
Eduardo Rodriguez To Record 6.5+ Strikeouts (+200)
The White Sox fired their general manager and team president last month, and released several underperforming players. Their lineup will have many young players in this final full month of the season. On Friday night against ERod, one of the best southpaws in baseball, the White Sox will likely be overmatched and swing and miss a lot.
