Tigers vs. Twins: Odds, picks and predictions 8/7/23

The Detroit Tigers have placed themselves in a tight spot. To say it’s a rock and a hard place is to understate the peril the team finds itself in. Now nine games out of first place, the Tigers have to win nearly every game against the division-leading Twins if they want to contend.

Baseball bettors can start the week off with the Top MLB Betting Apps page where we rate the Michigan sportsbooks, review promo offers, and more. Many of the sportsbooks are giving out bonus bets or other promotions to MI customers who register a new account.

The Tigers and Twins will play four games this week, and two more next week in Minnesota. This is the test: Detroit must get the clutch hitting and solid pitching to compete in these games and win most of them. Otherwise, Detroit will once again finish in the middle to bottom of the pack. There have been signs lately that the Tigers are coming out of a lineup funk.

Joey Wentz (2-9, 6.37 ERA, 72 K in 76.1 IP) vs Pablo López (6-6, 4.01 ERA, 165 K in 134.2 IP)

The Tigers are handing the ball to Wentz, who makes his return following an injury that’s sidelined the lefthander since late May. “It’s kind of similar to a pinched nerve,” manager A.J. Hinch explained. “Where he’s getting some sensation through the shoulder based on what’s going on in his neck.”

Despite his recent issues with his pinched nerve, and a 7.63 ERA in his last seven starts dating before the setback, Wentz will open a crucial series at home against the Twins. He likely won;t be asked to get much more than 3-4 innings. He hasn’t made so much as a relief appearance to settle back into his routine, so we wouldn’t expect much on Monday.

Back in May, López faced the Tigers and pitched well, allowing just three runs in six innings. But the Twins failed to win that game. Since, López has posted a 2.98 ERA, and he’s placed himself among the league leaders in strikeouts. His best pitch is his “sweeper,” a slider variant against which opposing batters are hitting .175 this season.

Minnesota’s Max Kepler slugged a HR off Wentz earlier this season… Wentz has held Michael Taylor to 1-for-7 lifetime… Eric Haase will likely be in Hinch’s lineup: he’s 2-for-3 against Pablo López… Kepler is the hottest Twin batter: he’s hitting .333 with three doubles and four homers in his last 12 games… Kerry Carpenter leads the Tigers with two homers and nine RBI in the last two weeks. His surge has solidified his status as a key member of the Detroit lineup.

Total Runs OVER 8.5 (-122 from FanDuel)

You’ll have to wager $122 to win $100, but if there was ever a game where the runners were going to circle the bases, it’s Monday with Wentz back on the hill, and Minnesota’s powerful lineup in town.

We used FanDuel’s Parlay Builder to create this five-leg wager. The odds are +3163, which means a winning $10 bet would net you $316.30, or bet $100 and you’ll win $3,163.
