Ohio Derby (Thistledown) Predictions, Picks, Betting Odds

Tawny Port, White Abarrio and Classic Causeway are entered in Saturday's $500,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown. Tawni Port won the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland two starts back. White abario finished seventh behind Rich Strike at Churchill Downs six weeks ago. Classic causeway has won three of six starts and will be ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr. on Saturday.

Tawny Port ran a solid race in the Kentucky Derby. He has shown nice progression in his career. Tawni Port won the Grade 3 Lexington two starts back. This race is a tougher field than his stakes win at Keeneland.

White Abarrio is the only Grade 1 winner in the field. He was beaten early in Kentucky Derby. White Abaro won in Florida Derby and Holy Bull. The son of Race Day is betting he is as good away from Gulfstream Park.

Ethereal road is a son of Quality Road who won an Oaklawn Park maiden race five starts back and the listed Sir Barton Stakes most recently. He has won three graded stakes races in between.

Barese is one of two New York-breds in the field trained by Mike Maker. He finished third last time, but he was probably less than at his sharpest dropping into a sprint. Barese won his first three starts and ran a decent race in a tough edition of the Grade 2 Wood Memorial.

Classic Causeway finished 11th in both the Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby. He has won two graded stakes races at Tampa Bay Downs. His trip at Churchill Downs was not good.

Droppin G's was a big longshot last out in the Grade 3 Matt Winn at Churchill Downs. He was beaten 14 lengths by Cyberknife and Howling Time. Droppins G’s only two wins came in maiden and allowance company on the synthetic surface at Turfway Park.

Brigadier General has been solid in his last three starts. He has the speed to be competitive early, but I don't like his chances to stick around when the real running begins. The other Maker-trained New York-bred, this son of Gormley has shown improvement of late while running against fellow state- breds.
