Omega European Masters Tips & Odds 2023 for the field

It was yet another profitable week for our man Jamie Broadhurst who nailed two winners at the PGA finale in Georgia and now his attention switches to the DP World Tour. Read below about his four selections for the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.

Last week’s preview brought us not one but two winners at the PGA Tour season closer, the Tour Championships,  where Viktor Hovland won the FedEx Cup and gained back to back tournament wins, he was advised at 9/2 but with a massive 5pt stake.

Xander Schauffele came tied first with Hovland on the 72-hole Stroke Play leaderboard, he was advised in last week's preview at 12/1 and 2.5pts each way. This meant that last week’s preview resulted in a 58.5pt profit in total and meant that my previews have advised a winner three times in the last four weeks.

Talking of profit, as the PGA Tour season came to an end last week, it was time to total up my season's tips/bets. My total profit for the 2022/2023 PGA Tour season was a massive 222.7pts, my most successful year in my four years of tipping for sure.

As the PGA Tour 2022/2023 season has come to an end and we have no tournaments in America for a couple of weeks, I really wanted to bring you a couple of previews of some really good DP World Tour events in the next few weeks. After the Czech Masters on the DP World Tour, I always feel like the events in Europe really ramp up, with some unreal golf courses on offer and some prestigious events.

This week is the turn of the Omega European Masters held at Crans-sur-Sierre in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. One of my favourite stops on tour, not only for the toughness of the test the players face but for the views of the Alps Mountain range of no other than Mont Blanc, viewable from a number of the holes. With the course standing at 1,500 meters above sea level, the ball flies much further than it usually does, bringing all sorts of players into the equation, so course experience may be the key this week or at least a good experience playing at altitude.

Crans-sur-Sierre GC

  • Par 70, 6850 yards
  • British designers – Fremantle and Gedge 1908, Seve Ballesteros renovation 1999
  • 5 x Par 3s – ranging from 175-200 yards
  • 10 x Par 4s – ranging from 331-540 yards
  • 3 x Par 5s – 552, 566 and 633 yards
  • Tree lined, narrow and undulating fairways
  • Tiny Bentgrass/Poa Annua greens
  • Tight run off areas

A tough set up in Crans-Montana this week. A short, intricate track where the players will need to ‘thread the needle’ on numerous occasions off the tee to hit the narrow tree lined fairways more times than not. Being on these fairways will be key this week as guys will be hitting their approaches into smaller than usual greens, which are surrounded by numerous bunkers and fast run off areas, so approach play will be key.

  • Thriston Lawrence 2022
  • Rasmus Hojgaard 2021
  • Sebastian Soderberg 2019
  • Matt Fitzpatrick 2018
  • Matt Fitzpatrick 2017
  • Alex Noren 2016
  • Danny Willett 2015
  • David Lipsky 2014
  • Thomas Bjorn 2013
  • Richie Ramsay 2012

Apart from perhaps Rasmus in 2021 who dominated with the driver. This is your typical second shot golf course, with stellar iron play a must.

Stats to look into this week

Strokes Gained: Off the Tee/Driving AccuracySebastian Soderberg OTT and Tee to Green was an exception to the rule and clearly won the 2019 edition with his scrambling ability. As I have already said above, finding these fairways in regulation and in the right positions to optimize approach shots will be absolutely key this week.

Greens in Regulation

With tiny greens, GIR will always come to the forefront if players want the best chance in scoring low. Finding the greens and holding them in regulation will have to be the state of play for the guys to do well here.

Scrambling

It may contradict the above, but greens will be missed this week as some of them are that small. So players will need a better than average scrambling game to get up and down from these closely mown run off areas around the greens.

Putting would normally be up there to make the difference, however the last three winners haven’t exactly gained numerous strokes on them. With the greens being smaller than average, if the guys’ approach game/proximity is on song then they will not have to rely on the putter as much.

Two-time winner of the Omega European Masters Matthew Fitzpatrick leads the market as favourite at 17/2. Very short in the market but Matt has had quite the successful and consistent year on the PGA Tour. He hits it longer than ever and has always been ultra-accurate off the tee. He also has a scrambling/putting game that will be very useful here in Switzerland. With the Ryder Cup on the Horizon and him pushing for automatic qualification, the extra incentive is certainly there for him to go well this week.

Second favourite at 14/1 is the very impressive Swedish talent Ludvig Aberg. Like Fitzpatrick, he is also pushing for a Ryder Cup selection after an unbelievably fast rise through the Tours and has recently impressed on the PGA Tour and last week in the Czech Republic where he finished in a tie for Third place. A lot are saying that it may be too soon and too quick to select Aberg for the Ryder Cup, but the distance he hits it and how accurate he is, he could be a real asset for the team. I will not be on him this week but will watch very closely with interest!

More Ryder Cup hopefuls come next in the market with the Hojgaard twins and Adrian Meronk. Nicolai Hojgaard was in pole position through two rounds last week and looked absolutely on point Tee2Green, I would side with him this week out of this trio.

At bigger odds I would look to the more consistent/accurate types like Richie Ramsay at 70/1 and Marcel Siem at 75/1.

Alexander Bjork - each-way 8 places

Four selections this week at the Omega European Masters, 1.25pts each way and all with 8 places with Bet365. Let's keep the good run going!

Alexander Bjork 25/1
Recent Form – 14-35-4-8-9
Course Form – 16-13-28-16

One of the form guys this year on the DP World Tour. He has 9 top 20s this year on Tour and has not missed a cut. He is deadly accurate with his irons, with Greens in Regulation being one of his fortes as he lies 10th for it on Tour this year. 5th for Driving Accuracy and 1st for Stroke Average on Tour also intrigues me and at such a good price I had to pull the trigger on Bjork this week! Win this week and he makes the Ryder Cup team also!

Victor Perez - each-way 8 places

Victor Perez 33/1
Recent Form – 11-41-35-MC-18
Course Form – MC-50-MC

Rewind three months and Victor was almost odds-on to be a captains pick come the Ryder Cup next month. He lost his way somewhat until the 11th place finish, where he finished top 20 for Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and 1st for Greens in Regulation. That was more than enough for me to take him this week and at his biggest price we have seen for Victor in a few months for sure on the DP World Tour.

Alex Fitzpatrick - each-way 8 places

Alex Fitzpatrick 50/1
Recent Form – 14-2-MC-1-39 (Challenge Tour form included)
Course Form – DEBUT

From one Fitzpatrick at the top of the market to his brother in Alex at 50/1 who is really at the beginning of what looks a successful career on Tour. He won four starts ago on the Challenge Tour at The British Challenge and was second a fortnight ago in Northern Ireland at the ISPS Handa World Invitational. His accurate play and his unbelievable scrambling resembles his brother Matt’s for sure, it is a bit of a gamble taking him at Crans for sure but I am more than confident he has the ability to go well on this short and intricate track!

Edoardo Molinari - each-way 8 places

Edoardo Molinari 100/1
Recent Form – 11-39-MC-MC-49
Course Form – 29-MC-MC-51-MC-65-53-13-12-2-14-MC-MC-56

My final pick of the week and my longshot for sure. An experienced pro who has tee’d it up here at Crans 14 times, averaging a score of 69 for every competitive round he has played here. Molinari has always been super solid from Tee2Green and is a machine with his irons, always hitting greens for fun. Molinari’s Achilles Heel has always been his putter however. Notorious for being worse than average on Tour for sure. However, two starts ago the Italian has seemed to have switched to the long handled putter after a conversation with Adam Scott about his woes. His last two performances on the DP World Tour have both been successful and have both seen him finish in the top 25 in the field for putting that week. A positive effect for sure it seems to have had on Edoardo and I am really keen to see how he fares here this week.
