Our experts have their say after Empress Josephine's 1,000 Guineas success

That trip looked the bare minimum for Empress Josephine and I would expect her to improve stepping up in distance. She could get a mile and a half in time – her sister Minding won the Oaks – and could land another Group 1 this term. Of those in behind, I certainly wouldn’t give up on Pretty Gorgeous, who looked plenty fresh for her first start of the season. Third home No Speak Alexander is also one to take from the race. She had them on the stretch at the two pole but didn’t quite see out the mile. She could be interesting dropping back to seven furlongs.

'The winner did incredibly well to get up'

The winner did incredibly well to get up and win from her position in a race that didn't appear to be run at any great gallop and expect her to prove the result was no fluke in the future. She hit the line strong and a stronger-run race would be of no inconvenience. However, I wouldn't give up on beaten favourite Pretty Gorgeous, who had a bit of a nightmare trip on the outside of the field and a lack of match practice also looked like it caught her out for a stride or two on her first run of the season. She still travelled like a quality filly and should naturally come forward for the run. She was a Group 1 winner over a mile last season and could be interesting over slightly further at some stage.

'This was a massive step up for her'

Empress Josephine did well to get up and this served as another reminder of just how much Aidan O'Brien's three-year-old fillies can progress with each run – this was a massive step up from her previous second in Listed company at Gowran. Pretty Gorgeous didn't have an ideal preparation coming to the Curragh, given she missed her intended Newmarket engagement, and there should be a fair deal of improvement to come from her. A wide draw and trip didn't help her cause either. If connections can find a suitable soft-ground option, No Speak Alexander should have a decent prize in her against her own sex this term. There was plenty to like about the way she kept boxing on in defeat.
