Preller's unsentimental approach is working
A.J. Preller has improved the Padres team that fell three wins short of this year's World Series. He's been very active in using his farm system in trades. His approach to homegrown players is different from Dave Dombrowski's. He trades high-end draftees or international amateur signees. It takes guts to trade prospects to the Rays. The hits have outweighed the misses. They include Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Jake Cronenworth and Josh Hader. In the summer, Prellner traded Ty France and Cal Quantrill Jr. to Seattle and Cleveland.
Jackson Merrill is a top prospect for the Padres. He's a lot younger than Miguel Cabrera, who came to the Marlins in 2003 when he was 20 years old. Cabrera played left field for them and helped them win a World Series.
