Premier League net spend table this season after January transfer window with Chelsea miles ahead after record spending spree

The Premier League net spend table has been updated with some surprising results.

It was a January transfer window like no other after over £750million was spent by Premier League clubs, where the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Porro and Anthony Gordon all made big moves.

Chelsea were the big spenders, splashing out on over £330m worth of players, landing eight in total, such as Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Joao Felix.

That including setting a new British transfer record with the £106.8m arrival of Fernandez from Benfica, fresh from his successful World Cup in Qatar where he helped Argentina to the title and was named young player of the tournament.

Whereas Everton appear to have gone backwards, offloading five players but failing to bring in a single new face – except newly appointed manager Sean Dyche, of course.

Manchester United spent heavily in the summer after Erik ten Hag arrived, bringing in big-money players such as Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.

It tempered their January ambitions but Wout Weghorst, Marcel Sabitzer and Jack Butland still made moves to Old Trafford, albeit on loan, placing the Red Devils second in the net spend table.

And in one of the more surprising deals of the transfer window, two-time PFA Team of the Year entree Joao Cancelo was allowed to leave Manchester City on loan for Bayern Munich after falling down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola

In fact, the Premier League champions are firmly in the green on net spend this season after a major cost-cutting operation that also saw Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko all depart in the summe.

Only Brighton have made more money than Man City this season.

After Chelsea’s winter spree, they are leading the net spend table by a huge distance, while they have only managed to offload the likes of Jorginho, Timo Werner, Billy Gilmour and Emerson Palmieri for significant fees.

And there might be no surprise to see Nottingham Forest with the third biggest net spend after an incredible summer that saw them sign 22 players.

The Tricky Trees continued to invest in January, too, with moves for Keylor Navas, Chris Wood and Danilo.

But fourth-placed net spenders West Ham will be severely disappointed after a huge summer splurge on the likes of Gianluca Scamacca, Lucas Paqueta and Nayef Aguerd which has, so far, failed to bear fruit as they fight to stay in the Premier League.

Arsenal bolstered their squad in January by signing Jorginho and Leandro Trossard as they look to win the Premier Keague for the first time in 20 years, but they have not made any big sales, carting Matteo Guendouzi, Bernd Leno and Lucas Torreira out for cheap in the summer.

However, they still sit behind the likes of Newcastle and Southampton in the net spend table in seventh after the Magpies brought in Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Gordon, but sold no one.

Liverpool have continued to act frugally and, although they did land Cody Gakpo from under United’s noses before the January window had even opened, their midfield concerns continue.

The signing of Darwin Nunez in the summer has appeared to hold them back and the Reds will reportedly instead go all-out at the end of the season for top target Jude Bellingham.

That will do little to appease Liverpool fans, though, who were keen to see their side improved as they sit ninth in the Premier League, just two ahead of their 11th-placed position in the net spend table, while Southampton outspent most clubs in January.

The Saints were only second to Chelsea’s mad spree in terms of splashing the cash, breaking their transfer record to sign Kamaldeen Sulemana, as well as signing Mislav Orsic, Paul Onuachu, Carlos Alcarez and James Bree.

Four clubs spent nothing – United, Crystal Palace, Brentford and Everton – although, other than the Toffees, those sides all made signings in the loan market.

That would have included Tottenham after signing Porro initially on loan, who will be made permanent in the summer by triggering his release clause.

However, Everton made the biggest buck in January after selling Gordon to Newcastle for a fee of up to £45m, but that will do little to help their efforts to stay in the Premier League after failing to spend a penny of those funds.

At this rate, Everton fans would take their net spend table position as their final Premier League position this season – 17th – as they would at least stay in the top flight.
