All But One of Last Season’s Top Four Handed Odds-On Prices

It is safe to say Manchester City will inevitably finish in the top four baring any major capitulations.

That leaves an intriguing conversation in regards to the rest of the places, with last season’s runners-up Arsenal the next-best in the current market.

If they are to miss out on securing a top four berth next term, it would come as an almighty disappointment given the ferocity of their title challenge last season. Not only this, but near-enough £200m spent on three additions so far in another significant summer of investment would leave them open to a tsunami of criticism.

Manchester United and Erik Ten Hag showed their ability to compete across the season in the Dutchman’s maiden year in English football. In what could prove to be a pivotal year in his vision for the future, Ten Hag will not only need to prove that they can challenge in the top four, but also for the title.

As for Newcastle, their intriguing price of 6/4 suggests bookmakers are leaving nothing up to chance as other teams around them continue to make improvements.

The Magpies were mightily impressive last term, proving themselves to be the joint-best defence in the league while showing real attacking intent. Although the added strain of Champions League football could threaten to de-rail their domestic form, 6/4 is still a favourable price and it is hard to see this rapidly emerging project going anywhere but upwards.

The Best of the Rest

Perhaps the biggest talking point surrounding the top four race next season is where Liverpool and Chelsea fit in.

Before the start of last season, it would’ve been inconceivable for the Reds to finish anywhere but the Champions League spots, but a turbulent year saw them miss out for the first time in six seasons.

A considerable effort this summer to set in motion a midfield overhaul could make them a dangerous prospect once more, but question marks remain over the defensive stability – only Brighton conceded more than them among the league’s top seven.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are somewhat of an unknown quantity. Reading too much into their second-lowest Premier League points tally could prove treacherous if new manager Mauricio Pochettino can begin to gel this star-studded squad.

The additions of Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku will provide a much needed epicentre at the spearhead of the attack, but their baffling downfall last season still has many treading with caution.

Tottenham will also benefit from the fresh ideas of a new manager, and it is hoped Ange Postecoglu’s careful man-management and expansive style of play will make a change from the succession of grating characters that have been at the helm in recent years.

An 11-point gap separating Spurs from the top four highlights the task at hand for the Australian, and keeping hold of Harry Kane could be the catalyst for a positive season.

Further down the market, Brighton and Aston Villa simply can not be counted out given their spectacular seasons. The former have looked even more daring in possession during their pre-season, and their world-leading scouting network has worked wonders in replacing top scorer Alexis Mac Allister.

Villa have been one of the busiest sides in the window so far, bringing in genuine top-level talent in the shape of Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres and Youri Tielemans, all of whom were being tracked by Europe’s elite. At a price of 9/1, they could be the ones to watch if Unai Emery continues their spectacular resurgence.
