Queensland Derby looming as a Group 1 kill for Kovalica

Kovalica is a red-hot favourite for Saturday’s Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) and is more than deserving of his $1.70 quote with Betr, according to the Punters Inside Run team.

The Waller-trained gelding is on the quick back-up after a slashing third in last week’s Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) against older horses.

“I thought last start there was a bit of a question mark on him coming off that foot abscess, but he drew the widest gate, was spotting them a big start, and ran straight past Zaaki,” James Lamb told Punters Inside Run.

“That’s pretty good form for a race like this back against his own age group.”

Mick Sharkie said he can’t see how Kovalica can be beaten, barring disaster.

“I know it’s only May but this is just about the bet of the year.

“I don’t think they will get anywhere near him in this race.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he was up near the top of the market for the Caulfield Cup after this race,” Sharkie said.

Punters Inside Run host Matt Campbell made it a clean sweep of tips for Kovalica, but believes $41 roughie Xtrarevz can spice up exotics.

“I like the way he got home in the Rough Habit and his last win was over 2200m, so the rise to 2400m won’t be an issue for Xtrarevz,” Campbell said.
