Ranking Every College Football Conference After the 2022 Season

Georgia repeated as national champions by beating TCU 65-7 on Monday night. Georgia is the current champion. The 2022 college football season has ended. Let's evaluate how each college conference did in 2022.

The MAC had the lowest average FPI ranking of all the conferences. Toledo won the conference by beating Ohio in the championship game. The Rockets finished the season 9-5 and handed Liberty its first-ever bowl loss with a 21-19 win in Boca Raton Bowl. Ohio finished 10-4 after a 30-27 win over Wyoming in Barstool Sports Bowl, which was the Bobcats' first 10 win season since 2011.

UTSA won the C-USA for the second straight season and finished 11-3. Western Kentucky finished 9-5 and won a New Orleans Bowl. UAB won its third bowl game in five seasons. The conference's 3- 3 record is not very good.

Fresno State won the MWC title game and the L.A. Bowl. Fresno State finished 10-4 and won its second straight 10 or more wins. Boise State had a 10th-place finish. Air Force had back-to-back 10 wins and a win in the Armed Forces Bowl, its fourth straight bowl victory. The Mountain West finished in a tie for third place with the Pac-12.

The Sun Belt had some upsets in the football season. App State knocked off Texas A&M, Marshall upset Notre Dame and Nebraska lost to Georgia Southern. Troy finished 12-2 and ranked 19th in AP poll. The conference had a 3-4 bowl record and 7 teams finish below .500. It was a fun and decent year for the conference. The Sun Bowl was won by South Alabama. They won the Sun League Championship Game.

Tulane won the AAC title and finished at No. 9 in the final AP poll. Cincinnati and UCF finished with nine wins each. The conference's .571 win percentage during bowl season was the third-highest. It's the first time in school history that Tulane were ranked in CFP's Top 25.

The ACC was left out of the playoff for the second straight season. Florida State had the best season with a 10-3 record. Duke had its best year since 2014, finishing 9-4. Mario Cristobal's Miami team went 5-7, Virginia finished 3-8, and VT finished with 3,8. Clemson won the ACC with 39-10 victory over UNC, but the Tigers' losses to Notre Dame and South Carolina kept them out.

The Pac-12 finished 3-4 in the bowl season. It has six teams ranked inside the AP Top 25. Five teams finished with double-digit wins. The conference hasn't had a team make the playoff since Washington in 2016. The league's leading passer, Michael Penix Jr., will be back next season, as will Bo Nix, Cameron Rising and Caleb Williams. They will play for the conference in 2023. There are also big-name quarterbacks that will return. For the next few years, the league will have a different coach each year.

TCU was college football's Cinderella team. The Big 12 had a national title game representative for the first time since 2005. Kansas State won the conference for firsttime since 2012. Texas finished ranked in the AP poll and improved to 8-5 after going 5-7 last year. Big12 finished with five teams below .500 in bowl season.

Michigan and Ohio State made it to the playoff. Penn State finished 11-2 with a Rose Bowl win over Utah. Purdue won the Big Ten West for the first time in school history. Five teams finished below .500 in the conference.   Michigan State, Indiana, Rutgers, Nebraska and Northwestern.

Georgia won the national championship. The SEC won its fourth straight championship this season. Alabama and Tennessee won their New Year's Six bowl games. LSU won SEC West and upset Alabama in overtime during the regular season, while South Carolina finished the season on a high note. Several teams had down years, including Florida, Texas A&M and Missouri. The expanded format to 12 teams will probably see multiple SEC teams make the playoff. Once it does in 2024, they will be more likely to make it.
