Sandown betting tips, preview and odds: Group races give great scope for Royal Ascot contenders

Sandown hosts a Thursday evening meeting that could be huge in the betting for some Royal Ascot races coming up in just a few weeks.

There are two Group races making up a huge event at Sandown Park racecourse and with Ascot looming we could see even some future festival winners.

But before the Group races set off there’s also a Class 1 to perfectly see punters into some great action and top sprinters.

Coral National Stakes Betting Tip

Democracy Dilemma tipped at 16/1 now into 10/1

This is a Listed Race for 2-year-olds over 5f and each of them have won over this distance either last time out or the race before last.

Democracy Dilemma for David Evans is one that could make all at big odds after winning at Chester in a Class 2 event in May by nearly four lengths.

Chester’s a tough track to win in and the first-time visor clearly made the difference even after going up in class.

The chance for those huge odds have somewhat dwindled with the field being whittled down.

But an each-way price of 10/1 shouldn’t put you off too much if progressing and gaining that confidence from that huge run earlier this month.

There’s just seven in the field despite a potential 17 being able to take the trip for the Listed National Stakes and the odds-on favourite, Crispy Cat, isn’t the safest of bets despite strong support.

Coral Henry II Group 3 Betting Tip

Thunderous 7/2

Enemy is the favourite for this race ahead of what could be a very good Ascot outing for the Ian Williams-trained gelding.

This Group 3 contest over 2m in what could be a great indicator for the Ascot Gold Cup which is run over 2m4f.

Enemy had a good run at Ascot in in April finishing just half a length behind Princess Zoe in third and clearly stays well over this distance.

Thunderous is going to be the main threat based on his valiant effort to come just a length behind Stradivarius at York in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup.

Thunderous could have spoilt the Stradivarius party there and with that form going into this should be the one to beat at Sandown having travelled well over 1m6f.

Quickthorn is another among the three favourites for this race and has the added allure of a trainer in-form with three wins in 19 and a jockey who has a 20% strike rate from 59 rides.

Another horse worth keeping an eye on in the market in the lead-up to the race on that basis is Alounak, the top-weight for Andrew Balding.

Both the trainer and jockey have been getting quite a few wins in along with a plethora of runners and rides in the last couple of weeks and could improve with this runner who did well at Chester earlier this month behind Hamish and Thunderous.

However, Thunderous still takes the backing here for Charlie & Mark Johnston in the Highclere Thoroughbred colours.

Coral Brigadier Gerard Stakes Betting Tip

Mostahdaf 5/4

This is another Group 3 race to feature in the evening meeting in Surrey.

It seems in the early betting that it’s going to be a contest between three horses, who all have in-form trainers and jockeys to boot.

Mostahdaf takes favouritism for John & Thady Gosden with Jim Crowley on board in the Shadwell colours which have been very prominent recently.

Bay Bridge with Ryan Moore taking the saddle for Sir Michael Stoute is another eye-catcher chasing a quintet of wins.

William Haggis and Tom Marquand are proving to be a very successful combination recently, and they hope that Addeybb coming back from a break can make all.

Haggis has a spectacular record, 17 wins from just 41 runners while Marquand also boasts a great winning rate as above.

The break for Addeybb won’t be a concern but coming 12 lengths behind Sealiway last time out at Ascot might be, but that was in Group 1 company.

Addeybb is also the top-rated horse in this, going off of a mark of 120.

The favourite looks the one to back though, having won at this course and distance by over two lengths to Foxes Tales.

With that it seems as though there’s more progression to this 4-year-old and could make all for a top trainer.

These all have numerous entries into Royal Ascot this year and given their abilities could make all in a variety of distances and classes.

Whitsun Cup Handicap Betting Tip

Farasi Lane 4/1

With the Group and Listed competition out of the way in the evening, the attention draws to the 8pm race, a Class 3 1m handicap.

Cheveley Park’s Inigo Jones under Ryan Moore is the favourite in the betting for trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

But there’s a few uncertainties given his form that he will prefer this trip to the usual 1m2f distances.

The main allure for this horse out of the renowned owners but this drop in class and switch back to turf, the first since being gelded, could bring about some improvement.

Farasi Lane, Rebel Territory, Ouzo and Raising Sand have won on this going or softer before and are safer on that basis to back than the favourite.

Farasi Lane gets the pick of the bunch though, having won over this course and distance prior with the booking of David Probert who’s been in-form.

A first time visor is also applied to see if he can add to that second place last time out.
