Scottish Open 2023 Picks, Predictions & Odds

With the Open Championship (a.k.a. the British Open) set to take place next week in Liverpool, England, many notable names from the PGA Tour are going to be getting some prep in on the other side of the pond in this week’s Scottish Open.

This tournament has been won by the likes of Tom Lehman, Ernie Els, and Phil Mickelson in the past, but the 2022 Scottish Open was the first year that the event was co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour.

Xander Schauffele won last year’s tournament by a single stroke over Kurt Kitayama, and the Olympic gold medalist is back to defend his title at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, a 7,237-yard, par-70 course.

Schauffele is one of the top contenders to go into the Open Championship on a winning note, but who else is among the Scottish Open favorites? Let’s take a look at the tournament odds, courtesy of Bovada.

Scottish Open 2023 Predictions and Picks

Tournament Winner Prediction & Pick: Scottie Scheffler (+700)

Even when you are one of the best in the world at what you do, a down week every now and then is to be expected.

For Scheffler, his down weeks over the last several months have been what would be good weeks for many of his peers on the PGA Tour.

Scheffler opened the 2022-23 PGA Tour campaign by finishing tied for 45th at the CJ Cup in South Carolina.

Since then, his worst finish in 17 tournaments is a tie for 12th at the Genesis Invitational in February. That 12th-place finish is just one of three outside of the top ten in this period.

And since finishing tied for 11th at the RBC Heritage in April, Scheffler has finished tied for fifth (AT&T Byron Nelson), tied for 2nd (PGA Championship), tied for third (Charles Schwab Challenge), third (The Memorial Tournament), third (U.S. Open), and tied for fourth (Travelers Championship).

That is absurd. Ab-surd.

The only thing missing from Scheffler’s run of results is more wins. He has two wins this season, with the most recent coming at the Players Championship in March.

Will the Scottish Open be where he picks up his third win of the season? With how he has been knocking and knocking and knocking on the door, a win is most certainly around the corner, and I really like his chances to back up his status as the tournament favorite this week.

Other Tournament Picks

The below picks are courtesy of BetUS, which has a very comprehensive selection of Scottish Open betting markets.

Rory McIlroy to finish in the top 10 (+110)

While Scheffler has been the picture of consistency throughout this season, McIlroy has put together a nice string of results since missing the cut at the Masters and then finishing tied for 47th at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Over his last five tournaments, McIlroy has finished tied for seventh (PGA Championship), tied for seventh (The Memorial Tournament) ninth (RBC Canadian Open), second (U.S. Open), and tied for seventh (Travelers Championship).

When he has been on such a solid run, getting plus odds for him to finish in the top ten at the Scottish Open feels like an absolute steal.

For the record, Scheffler is +105 to finish in the top ten, which feels like quite the steal as well.

Xander Schauffele to finish in the top 20 (-115)

Schauffele has yet to win this season, and I don’t think that run will come to an end at the Scottish Open.

But since finishing outside of the top 30 at the Genesis Invitational and then the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Schauffele’s worst finish in nine tournaments is a tie for 24th (The Memorial Tournament). Each of his other eight results in that stretch are in the top 20, including five top-ten finishes.

Rickie Fowler to finish in the top 20 (-115)

I’m staying consistent with theme of consistency here and go with another golfer who has been churning out solid results recently.

Other than a missed cut at the PGA Championship, Fowler has finished at the upper end of the leaderboard every time he has hit the course over the last four months. In his last ten tournaments, that missed cut is the only time he has finished outside of the top 15.

A little over a week ago, Fowler picked up his first win since 2019, as he won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in a playoff over Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin.

Finally getting back in the win column can only boost his confidence for his return to the course this week and for next week’s event at Royal Liverpool.
