Super Bowl MVP odds: Patrick Mahomes is the favorite ahead of Brock Purdy

The Kansas City Chiefs are not the favorite against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58, but Patrick Mahomes is the favorite to win Super Bowl MVP ahead of the action in Las Vegas. Mahomes is +125 on BetMGM to win the award for a third time.

Super Bowl MVP is a quarterback-dominated award so it’s no surprise to see Brock Purdy second behind Mahomes in the odds. Purdy is +210. Christian McCaffrey is +450.

Correct or not, Purdy is seen as more of a game manager and McCaffrey, along with Deebo Samuel and George Kittle, are the stars of the 49ers offense. A running back has not won the Super Bowl MVP since Terrell Davis won it when the Broncos beat the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Davis ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns.

Before the conference championship games, Lamar Jackson was the favorite, but the Chiefs’ 17-10 road win in Baltimore put Mahomes in the top spot. Even if the Chiefs do not win, it would be a shock to see Mahomes not win the award if the Chiefs won. He was the MVP in both of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl wins in the Mahomes era.

Travis Kelce is getting plenty of attention lately and has been stellar this postseason. The star tight end had 11 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown in the AFC Championship Game. In three playoff games this year, Kelce has racked up 23 catches for 262 yards with three touchdowns. Another big game could give him a chance to win, perhaps even playing more prominently in voters’ minds due to his extra Taylor Swift-influenced notoriety lately. Still, it will be tough to overcome Mahomes. After all, any Kelce touchdown will also be a Mahomes touchdown, barring injury or trick play. Kelce is still a bit of a longshot at +1850.

After Kelce, it’s all longshots. Samuel (+3000), Isiah Pacheco (+3500), Brandon Aiyuk (+5000),  Rashee Rice (+6000) and Kittle (+8000) are the next group in the odds. The Super Bowl MVP odds have been moving a lot since the game was set. See below for live odds.

Quarterbacks have won 32 Super Bowl MVPs all-time, including 12 of the last 17.

As regular season slog gives way to Super Bowl run, Patrick Mahomes remains inevitable
