Setting up a Rugby League club in a heavy Union area was not going to be easy, but Tarka Storm, now in their fifth season, have defied the odds.

This season, the club boasts players from local union clubs, such as South Molton, Tiverton, Bideford, Torrington and Wiveliscombe.

The first game of the 2023 South West League went well for the club. Everything looked great, from the pitch to the players, and the new kit - the whole package.

However, the Devon Sharks had already played a game this season, and that advantage was evident from the first whistle to the last. The Sharks were constantly on the attack, taking advantage of a slow defensive line and gaining metres, which resulted in try after try for them.

In the second half, Tarka had a desperate need for shade, but it was also time for the Storm to step up their game. The players focused on speeding up the ruck area and playing the ball quickly, which pushed the Sharks back and started to turn the game around. However, the weather and fitness levels took their toll, as the Sharks managed to score a couple more tries.

Club chairman Neil Edwards said: “We may not have won the game, but we are always striving to be better!

“Reflecting on the game, we have identified areas where we can improve our strategies, strengthen our teamwork, enhance our skills. Every setback is an opportunity for growth, we are ready to seize it.

“We believe in the power of continuous improvement, both on and off the pitch. Together, we will regroup, analyse our performance, work harder to come back stronger. Remember, success is a journey, not a single destination.

“A huge shoutout to everyone who came and watched, your cheers and positive energy fuel us to keep pushing forward, no matter the result.

“Tarka Storm is a vibrant and dynamic organisation dedicated to promoting and offering rugby league to the North Devon area. We strongly believe in an inclusive and safe space for everyone.”

Tarka Storm are located at South Molton Rugby Club and they train every Wednesday, starting at 7pm - 8:30pm. The club offers male and female rugby league to those over the age of 16 years. All games are free with a free car park.
