The camaraderie of horse racing
Betsy Clemens, Judy Seamon and Beverly Field are betting on pari-mutuel harness racing at the Farmington Fairgrounds. The three women have been betting since they were 8 years old. They are part of a tight-knit community in the horse racing industry. The industry is a business but also a family affair. Shannon Smith and Gloria Cushing are members of the Maine Harness Horsemen's Association. Their son Mike Cushings is president of this association. It's a symbiotic industry with a long chain of impact. There are farmers, feed stores, equipment providers and filling stations.
