The history of Black jockeys in Triple Crown races
Only four Black jockeys have participated in the first leg of the Triple Crown since 2000. Jim Crow, violence and a limited number of riding slots were the reasons for the exclusion. The last Black rider to compete in a Triple crown was Winkfield, who died in 1974. He was injured and beaten by white jockey. The sport was in decline in 1890s. There was a growing anti-gambling crusade. Some tracks were closed. It was also a reason for limiting the number and number riding slot. Today, there are more riding spots for Black riders.
