“This is not right”: Hawkes, O’Neill can’t understand timing of Berry investigation

Tommy Berry is being investigated by the police. His phone was requested in September and his mother Julie had her phone and bank records looked at. The investigation centres around a punter Jacob Hoffmann, who owns horses in Victoria. Wayne Hawkes and John O'Neill question the timing of the investigation. It comes on the eve of Caulfield Cup and The Everest taking place in Melbourne and Sydney this Saturday.

Hawkes and O'Neill are upset with the timing of the investigation into the death of John Berry. They think it's unfair for the people involved to have their names dragged through the mud ahead of racing's most popular time of year.

Hawkes and O'Neill are angry about the timing of the Tommy Berry investigation. Berry is set to ride Numerian for Annabel Neasham in the Caulfield Cup. There is no suggestion that Berry, Nisbet, Martin or Mallyon have been involved in any wrongdoing. Racing NSW’s chief steward Marc Van Gestel has also refrained from commenting at this stage.
