Sydney Racing Editor Ray Thomas reviews what has been a memorable spring carnival of racing in Sydney

Tommy Berry won the VRC Oaks and the Five Diamonds last week. Sydney's extended spring carnival has encroached on Melbourne's spring program. Berry rode at Flemington during the Cup Carnival and at Rosehill Gardens last Saturday to win the inaugural FiveDiamonds. The new races are keeping horses in training longer. A few years ago, the good stallions were being retired as three-year-olds.

The Sydney spring carnival ended with the Five Diamonds meeting. The Everest and Golden Eagle races should be given the status of a Group 1 race. The Golden Eagles have been of the highest quality.

Giga Kick won The Everest at the spring carnival in Sydney. Golden Eagle winners Kolding, Colette and I'm Thunderstruck were trained on to win at Group 1 level.

The Golden Gift is an early ticket into the Golden Slipper. Breeders Plate and Gimcrack Stakes should be added to The Everest meeting.

Barber won the Golden Gift at the spring carnival in Sydney. The opening two-year-olds races of the season are traditionally run on Epsom Day. Flying Trapeze finished unplaced last Saturday.

Racing NSW and ATC should consider moving the Silver Eagle and Gloaming Stakes meetings to Rosehill. The second Saturday meeting in October would give Royal Randwick two weeks rest after the Epsom meeting. Rose Hill is the traditional home of the Glosaming.

Rustic Steel won The Big Dance at Royal Randwick on Cup Day. Racing NSW might need to tweak the Big dance qualifiers.

The carnival is over for another year. Next weekend there is The Hunter at Newcastle and The Gong at Kembla Grange. The Ingham is next month.
