Tigers vs. Guardians: Odds, predictions and best bets 9/29/2023

M Live

A three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians is the only thing between the Detroit Tigers and the off-season. It may be an off-season filled with hopes about the 2024 baseball season, as the Tigers have gone 41-37 since July 1.

Michigan bettors still have a few days to make a profit on the Tigers. In particular, Caesars Sportsbook is offering a $1,000 first bet for new MLive users. To take part in this offer, use exclusive code SLMLIVE1000 when signing up.

Game Details

  • Who: Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians
  • When: Friday, September 29
  • Time: 6:40 p.m. ET
  • Where: Comerica Park (Detroit, MI)

MLB Odds:

Joey Wentz (3-12, 6.45 ERA, 96 K in 103.1 IP) vs. Cal Quantrill (3-7, 5.13 ERA, 55 K in 94.2 IP)

Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill has been excellent since coming off the injured list due to shoulder inflammation. In his last 27 ⅔ innings, Quantrill has allowed only six earned runs. He’s an anomaly in today’s game: a pitch-to-contact hurler who struggles with his control. His K-to-BB ratio is 17-12 in his last five starts. He’s faced Detroit once in 2023: six innings of shutout ball in Detroit in June. But that was before his two stints on the IL. In a strange season for the right-hander, we can’t count on him to do much on the K line for a prop bet. You shouldn’t either.

Set your DVR, because Friday’s game at Comerica Park may be the last time you see Joey Wentz in a Tigers’ uniform. The team has control of Wentz for a few more seasons, he can’t be a free agent until 2029. But, his seventh season in professional baseball hasn’t been encouraging. Detroit president of baseball operations Scott Harris has hired a general manager, and that GM should likely take a look at whether Wentz should be on the staff in the major leagues in 2024 and beyond. Wentz is walking nearly four batters and allowing nearly two home runs per nine innings in the majors. He’ll be 26 next season, and he might be on a team, but it’s probable Harris or his new hire will trade him this offseason. We don’t want to wager on Wentz on the K line, or bank on him posting a quality start to help the Tigers to a win.
