Weili Zhang (23-3) is back on her throne after making quick work of Carla Esparza (2022) submitting her in the second round. That came after her spinning backfist TKO over the former strawweight Queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk (2022) firmly putting her losses to Rose Namajunas (2021) behind her.

Now, she defends her crown against Amanda Lemos (13-2-1) who makes her second attempt at gold. Her first was against Jessica Andrade (2022) and she did not give a good account of herself tapping out in a standing arm triangle. This fight is going completely under the radar. They are the two most impressive and powerful athletes in the division and they have the skills to back it up. They are both assassins with knockout power and superb grappling.

We hope to see a mixture of striking and grappling but expect the majority of this to play out on the feet. We can see them tying up if someone gets rocked or if Lemos begins to fatigue, but until then, it should be a fierce striking battle.

Lemos has the ability to knock Zhang out, especially as her chin has already been tested by Namajunas. However, Zhang’s technique is at such a level, we back her avoid the power shots and counter with her own.

Lemos has exceptional takedown defence, but if this goes into the championship rounds, we can see Zhang mix her attacks up to empty the gas tank of the Brazilian.
