England have been named as second favourites to win this summer's Women's World Cup behind the reigning champions USA.

The Lionesses head into the tournament in Australia and New Zealand as European champions, and Betfair have given them odds of 10/3 to lift the World Cup trophy in Sydney on 20th August, with USA at 11/4.

England manager Sarina Wiegman announced her 23-women squad on Wednesday afternoon for this summer's World Cup which gets underway in Auckland in 20th July.

All three of England's group matches take place in Australia, starting with a game against Haiti in Brisbane on 22nd July, before they play Denmark in Sydney on the 28th and China in Adelaide on 1st August.

The Lionesses have been backed as the second favourites for the tournament despite missing many of the key members of the squad who won the Euros last summer, through a mixture of injuries and retirement.

Only seven of the 11 players who started the Euro 2022 final at Wembley last summer have made the squad.

Record goalscorer Ellen White retired soon after the tournament, and Fran Kirby, captain Leah Williamson and Euros player of the tournament and Golden Boot winner Beth Mead are all out injured.

USA are the 11/4 favourites having won the last two tournaments, meaning the Stars and Stripes have now won four of the eight World Cups that have taken place.

Spain were the favourites heading into last summer's Euros but were also hit by high profile injuries on the eve tournament, none more so than the Ballon d'Or Feminin winner Alexia Putellas, who will be back this summer and eager to bring a first major trophy back to Spain.

La Roja are third favourites to won the World cup at 6/1, while two-time world champions and eight-time European champions Germany are just behind at 13/2.

Semi finalists at last year's Euros, France round up the top five favourites at 10/1 as they sit just ahead of co-hosts Australia, backed at 13/1.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “England are the 10/3 second-favourites to win the 2023 Women’s World Cup as Sarina Wiegman named her 23-woman squad on Wednesday, notably without injured trio Beth Mead, Leah Williamson and Fran Kirby.

Four-time World Cup winners USA are the 11/4 frontrunners to lift a third successive trophy, while Spain are 6/1, with Germany 13/2.”
