Yankees vs. Tigers prediction and odds for Thursday, Aug 31 (Young Yanks Coming Soon)
On Wednesday night, the New York Yankees locked up a series win for the first time in 11 tries. Now, at 65-68, they’ll go for the four-game sweep of the 59-74 Detroit Tigers. Soon, they’ll have a few reinforcements, but they're not here yet.
For the series finale, the Yankees will hand the ball to Clarke Schmidt to make his 27th start of the season. Schmidt is 8-8 in his previous 26 starts and one relief appearance, sporting a 4.51 ERA. Detroit will counter with 5-4 Matt Manning, who has a 3.93 ERA in 13 starts this year.

Jasson Dominguez has been a potential star that’s been looming in the Yankees organization for quite a few years now. He’s still just 20 years old, but some of the shine has come off his rising star. He’s fallen to No. 78 in MLB Pipeline’s most recent top 100 prospects ranking, and slots in as the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect. Austin Wells was also once a top 100 prospect, but is now No. 8 in the Yankees' organization (per Pipeline) and outside the top 100. Both of these prospects will be active for New York's series with Houston that begins on Friday.
Clarke Schmidt has been good in his last two starts, but New York has lost both. He has a 4.24 FIP and a 4.12 xERA, so I have faith in another strong outing. Schmidt has great control and a walk rate in the 82nd percentile. It may be his best trait, and it'll mean the base-paths will be very clear in this one because Detroit is one of seven teams to have less than 400 walks this season.
On the other side, I have zero faith in Matt Manning. I'm not sure how anyone could. He only has 45 strikeouts in 71.0 innings pitched. That's a fifth percentile strikeout rate. He is also bottom five percent of all pitchers in whiff rate, chase rate, and xSLG. He not only doesn't miss bats, but he doesn't miss barrels, either. His xERA is 5.51.
I’ll take the Yankees and, even though he’s no longer getting compared to Bo Jackson and Mike Trout, I’m still excited to see “The Martian” in pinstripes. We'll just have to wait one more day to see it.
