Yankees vs Tigers Prediction, Picks, Odds

Despite Matt Manning's recent string of success, there's reason to fade the right-hander. He came away from his last start with a back injury and may not be 100%. Then there's Gleyber Torres who, unlike many of his Yankees peers, has been on fire of late.

The New York Yankees can complete a four-game sweep of the skidding Detroit Tigers when the clubs finish off their set at Comerica Park this afternoon.

Detroit will hope to snap its five-game losing skid by handing the ball over to Matt Manning, who’s been excellent over his last three starts with just one earned run allowed over that span.

Can the Yankees solve Manning and complete the sweep? We’ll discuss in our Yankees vs. Tigers MLB picks and predictions for Thursday, August 31.

Yankees vs Tigers predictions

Gleyber Torres homered in his third straight game while DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton also went yard as the Yankees cruised to a 6-2 win over the Tigers on Wednesday, snapping New York’s 10-series winless streak.

Torres is now up to a team-leading 11 hits, four home runs, and seven RBI over the past week, with most of that damage coming in this series against Detroit. The second baseman has recorded multiple hits and at least five total bases in each of the last three contests vs. the Tigers.

Manning will try to slow down Torres and the Yankees but that won’t be an easy task. The right-hander was exceptional last time out, holding the Astros to just one hit and one unearned run over 6 1/3 innings on August 25. He’s arguably playing his best baseball of the season over his last three starts, but is it just a blip on the radar?

Manning allowed 24 hits and 17 earned runs over his three starts prior to this three-game hot streak and has given up at least four earned runs in five of his 13 appearances this season. He also experienced a stinger in his lower back during that outing, which initially brought his availability for this start into question.

While there is a chance we see the Tigers starter have another good performance, I’ll take the more proven commodity in Torres to get the upper hand and grab another RBI.

One added reason why Torres is in a good position to drive in a run is he's been hitting third in the batting order, right behind superstar Aaron Judge. And while Judge will often clear the bases with a monstrous round-tripper, he's also an elite on-base machine and draws a ton of walks, as evidenced by his .393 OBP on the season.

The aforementioned LeMahieu has generally been penciled in as the team's leadoff hitter and after a rough start, he's batting .293 with a .396 OBP in the second half. This pair should give Torres ample opportunities to get the job done.

My best bet: Gleyber Torres Over 0.5 RBI (+155 at DraftKings)

Yankees vs Tigers same-game parlay

Gleyber Torres Over 0.5 RBI

DJ LeMahieu 2+ total bases

Tigers team total Under 4.5

On top of a Torres RBI, I’ll be looking for LeMahieu to pick up another multi-base performance as part of today’s same-game parlay. The third baseman homered to record four bases on Wednesday and has posted two-plus in four of his last six outings and five of his last eight.

I’ll close out the parlay by banking on the Tigers to have another slow offensive night and cash the team total Under on 4.5 runs. Detroit has scored four runs or fewer in seven straight games, while New York starter Clarke Schmidt has held opponents to two earned runs or less in four of his last five outings.

Yankees vs Tigers moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Yankees opened as the road favorite at -118 on the moneyline and while they’ve struggled of late, I still like the visitors to complete the sweep over the skidding Tigers.

Detroit has lost five straight, averaging just 2.20 runs per game over that span and scoring two runs or fewer in four of those outings. Even if Manning does have another good start, it’s unlikely the team behind him will put up enough offense to maintain a lead.

New York has also dominated this series in recent years, winning six straight meetings and eight of the last nine going back to last season.

Today’s total opened at 8.5 runs and the Under is the play with how sluggish these offenses have been.

Both the Yankees and Tigers have been amongst the worst offensive clubs in the majors this month, with New York scoring just 104 runs (25th) and Detroit 106 (22nd). The Tigers are averaging 3.93 runs per game in August — and have been even worse this week — while the Yankees are at 3.85. We also haven’t seen the teams cash an Over in their three meetings so far this series.

Starting pitchers

Clarke Schmidt (8-8, 4.51 ERA): Schmidt put up another solid start in his last appearance on August 26, holding the Rays to six hits and one earned run over 6 2/3 innings. Outside of a nine-hit, eight-run meltdown against the Braves on August 14, Schmidt has been solid for the last few weeks. He’s given up more than three earned runs just once over his last 18 starts.

Matt Manning (5-4, 3.93 ERA): Manning is currently in the midst of his best run of the season, holding the Astros, Guardians, and Red Sox to a combined total of eight hits and one earned run across his last three outings. He gave up six earned runs in the start prior, though, so we’ll see if he can avoid another meltdown.
