2023 Memorial Tournament picks, odds, predictions, field: Golf insider fading Rory McIlroy at Muirfield

Jon Rahm still has some unfinished business at Muirfield Village, and he'll be trying to bounce back this week at the 2023 Memorial Tournament. Rahm won the Memorial in 2020 and dominated in 2021 before having to withdraw after taking a six-shot lead through three rounds. The Spaniard tied for 10th last year, and now he comes in off a tie for 50th at the PGA Championship two weeks ago. Rahm is one of several stars in the loaded 2023 Memorial Tournament field who took last week off, but Scottie Scheffler is not in that group. The world's No. 1 golfer posted a top-five finish at the Charles Schwab Classic. Joining Rahm and Scheffler in Dublin, Ohio is a stacked invitational field also featuring Rory McIlroy and two-time Memorial champion Patrick Cantlay. After Rahm and Cantlay ruled for three years, Billy Horschel broke through for his seventh tour victory last year, and he will defend starting Thursday.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Scheffler (6-1) and Rahm (7-1) as the favorites in its latest 2023 Memorial Tournament odds. Cantlay (10-1), McIlroy (12-1) and Xander Schauffele (14-1) also are expected to be top contenders. Viktor Hovland (20-1) and Collin Morikawa (22-1) are the only other golfers shorter than 30-1, while Horschel is a 125-1 longshot to repeat as champion. Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and betting head-to-head matchups. At the Wells Fargo, he had Wyndham Clark among his longshot outrights, backing the 75-1 shot before he dominated at Quail Hollow for his first PGA Tour victory.

In 2022, Nejad hit six first-round leaders in a 12-week span while peppering in tournament outrights throughout the year. In 2023, Sportsline debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two FRLs and three outright winners. Nejad also had a winning head-to-head record in eight of 10 weeks (including full tournament sweeps on head-to-head plays). He was up more than 70 units over that three-month span.

Now, Nejad has studied the 2023 Memorial Tournament field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all of Nejad's PGA picks and analysis.

Top 2023 Memorial Tournament expert picks

In one shocking move, Nejad is fading four-time major champion McIlroy, one of the favorites. The 34-year-old doesn't have a great history at Muirfield and has struggled more often than not this season. He did manage a top-10 finish at the PGA Championship but barely cracked the top 50 in his previous outing and missed the cut at the Players and Masters. The Northern Irishman's best finish in his past four trips to Muirfield is T-18. His performance off the tee (189th in driving accuracy) and to the greens (154th in greens in regulation) indicate the depth of his struggles.

On the other hand, Nejad sees a lot of value in Tyrrell Hatton at 35-1. The Englishman has finished in the top 20 in four straight tournaments, and the expert says he "simply checks all the boxes." Hatton is 49th in strokes gained around the green and ranks in the top 20 in every other strokes gained category. That well-rounded game should play well at Muirfield, and the 31-year-old has seven victories worldwide. His only tour win came more than three years ago, but Nejad says "I think he has a shot to win The Memorial" at what he sees as a solid number. See who else he is backing at SportsLine.
