2023 U.S. Open odds, picks, predictions, field: Golf expert fading Scottie Scheffler at Los Angeles CC

Scottie Scheffler has his sights set on a second major title, but he'll have to get past many golfers who have already accomplished that feat at the 2023 U.S. Open. The second major championship of the PGA Tour season tees off Thursday, June 15 at Los Angeles Country Club, and the 2022 Masters champion will come in as the world's top-ranked golfer. Scheffler is the 7-1 favorite in the latest 2023 U.S. Open odds from Caesars Sportsbook, but Jon Rahm (8-1), Brooks Koepka (9-1) and Rory McIlroy (10-1) are right behind.

Max Homa (14-1), Thomas (16-1) and Patrick Cantlay (16-1) also are among the favorites in the 2023 U.S. Open 2023 . Cameron Smith, Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele are all priced at 18-1. Morikawa (22-1), Spieth (25-1) and reigning champion Matt Fitzpatrick (25-1) also are among the 15 U.S. Open contenders shorter than 30-1. Before making any 2023 U.S. Open picks, see the PGA predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad.

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and betting head-to-head matchups. At the Wells Fargo, he had Wyndham Clark among his longshot outrights, backing the 75-1 shot before he dominated at Quail Hollow for his first PGA Tour victory.

In 2022, Nejad hit six first-round leaders in a 12-week span while peppering in tournament outrights throughout the year. In 2023, Sportsline debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two FRLs and three outright winners. Nejad also had a winning head-to-head record in eight of 10 weeks, including full tournament sweeps on head-to-head plays. He was up more than 70 units over that three-month span.

Now, Nejad has focused his attention on the 2023 U.S. Open field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See all his picks at SportsLine

Top 2023 U.S. Open expert picks

One shocker from Nejad: The expert is fading Scottie Scheffler, even though he's the No. 1 player in the world. Scheffler has been piling up high finishes, but he hasn't won since the Players Championship in March. Part of the reason for that has been his inability to convert putts. Scheffler leads the tour in scoring average and strokes gained total, but he is 146th in strokes gained putting. The 26-year-old has shot at least one round of 71 or higher in four straight tournaments and has lost 13 strokes with the putter over the past two.

On the other hand, Nejad sees value in Patrick Cantlay as he tries to put past major disappointments behind him. Cantlay hasn't finished higher than 14th at the U.S. Open and his best showing in a major is a third-place finish at the PGA Championship in 2019. However, the 31-year-old is among the best on tour in most metrics and has seven top-10 finishes this season. Cantlay hasn't won this season, but six of his eight career victories have come over the past two seasons. He leads the tour in total driving, which will be a big advantage at LACC, and ranks fifth in scoring average and seventh in greens in regulation. See who to back here.
