British Champions Day Tips

Ascot is a testing track at the best of times, but that will be particularly true on Champions Day, when the ground is expected to be very much on the soft side.

Champions Day gets underway with the Long Distance Cup at 1:15pm on Saturday. The betting revolves around the top two – Kyprios and Trueshan. Aidan O’Brien was happy just to get Kyprios back to the track after a long time out.

Whether he’s up for such a gruelling test at this point of his comeback is up for debate. Trueshan, who won this race last year, might not have the same class as Kyprios but does look more primed for this.

The feature race – the Qipco Champions Stakes at 3:45pm – is an international affair. France has a leading contender in the form of Horizon Dore, who has won four in a row in France. None of those have been at the Group 1 level, though, so some question marks remain.

At a huge price, Point Lonsdale could be worth a second look. He’s the rank outsider of the field and has plenty to find on ratings. He was beaten under four lengths in the Irish Champion Stakes, though, and should relish the soft conditions here. There are far worse 66/1 shots out there.
