Leicester’s quest set to end in tears

The Foxes have dug themselves into a real hole over the past few months and the reality is that the 2016 Premier League winners could well be playing in the Championship next season.

Leicester have to beat the Hammers on the final day of the campaign – and hope that Everton fail to win at home to Bournemouth – but there has been little evidence recently that the east Midlands outfit can get out of trouble.

The need for points has been urgent for some time now, but they were listless in a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool in their last home game and they were only able to show any attacking intention in the closing minutes of last Monday’s goalless draw at Newcastle.

The Foxes have won just two of their previous 12 matches at the King Power and that means there is little motivation to back them at odds-on to see off the Hammers.

The home team have greater motivation than David Moyes’s side who are already safe, but there will still be plenty of West Ham players hoping to put in a good performance and be involved in their Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina on June 7 in Prague.

They put another relegation candidate in their place last Sunday when they beat Leeds 3-1 and, while their away form this season has been patchy, they look a strong bet to get something from their trip to the East Midlands.

Paqueta can star for Hammers

Moyes has the luxury of being able to shuffle his West Ham pack for the final league game of the campaign and either Michail Antonio or Danny Ings could be a real handful for a home defence who will be hoping their colleagues can do the damage at the other end.

However, playmaker Lucas Paqueta also has the potential to make his mark at the King Power Stadium.

The Brazilian was last on target in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool a month ago when he scored his sixth league and cup goal of the season, but he has not been shy about trying his luck in the Hammers’ recent outings.

Paqueta has had 11 shots in his past four matches – a tally that includes five efforts over the two legs of the Irons’ Europa Conference semi-final against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar – and he registered four attempts in last week’s win over Leeds.

There is a good chance he could be afforded plenty of space if Leicester get increasingly desperate and he looks a decent bet to find the net anytime.

Maddison could see yellow again

Leicester have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their past 12 league games at the King Power, so backing West Ham to find the net on Sunday could be considered the cornerstone of a #PickYourPunt selection.

And another component could be to go low on the number of corners the home side manage to muster.

While the emphasis is obviously on the Foxes to push forward in search of the win that could save their skins, it is notable that Nottingham Forest are the only team to have forced fewer corners in the Premier League this season than Leicester’s tally of 132.

That averages around 3.5 per game, and although they will be looking to be on the offensive it may not be through wide areas. So backing under 5.5 corners for the Foxes could provide some leeway.

Midfielder James Maddison was not introduced until half-time against Newcastle on Monday and he will be looking to have a much greater impact than he did at St James’ Park.

Leicester need their star man to be front and centre and it would not be a surprise if he were to pick up his 11th yellow card in all competitions this season.
