Bees backed to bounce back

Southampton’s battle to beat the drop continues on Wednesday evening when they welcome Brentford to St Mary’s.

The Bees won the reverse fixture 3-0 last month and Thomas Frank’s side are favourites to come away with the spoils in this midweek showdown.

Brentford are ninth in the Premier League and can move to within a point of sixth-placed Liverpool with a win over the rock-bottom Saints.

Having come up short in their 1-0 defeat at Everton on Saturday, the visitors will be determined to get their push for European football back on track on Wednesday.

Frank’s side also tend to respond well after a defeat, having not suffered back-to-back losses in the Premier League this season.

The visitors are well priced at 6/4 to come away with another three points in their bid to secure European football for the first time in their history.

Toney primed to strike again

With 15 goals in 23 Premier League appearances this season, Bees centre-forward Ivan Toney is enjoying another excellent campaign in the top flight. 

A prolific finisher and an expert from the penalty spot, the 26-year-old should cause a fragile home defence plenty of problems.

No team have scored more penalties in the Premier League than Brentford’s six this season and Toney is a man in form after notching in two of Brentford’s previous four games.

One-sided affair in store

In recent years, this fixture has not been one to throw up many contests in which both sides have scored, with a team winning to nil in five of the previous six meetings.

Brentford may well be able to shut out Southampton, who were goalless against 10-man Manchester United last time out, and getting over 1.5 goals looks feasible for the visitors, who average 1.6 goals a game this season.

While former Northampton Town and Newcastle United striker Toney is a prolific goalscorer, he does seem to be just as adept at getting in trouble with the referee.

With eight yellow cards for Brentford this Premier League season, Toney has four more than any of his team-mates, with Aaron Hickey and Brian Mbeumo both on four for the campaign.
