Boughey's mare the one to beat

Day two at the July Festival at Newmarket is headlined by the Falmouth Stakes. This Group One provides three-year-old fillies with their first opportunity to take on older mares over a mile and we've got a good mix of both generations entered for Friday's renewal.

Here's our free guide to the 2023 Falmouth Stakes, featuring our best betting tips.

George Boughey's mare, Via Sistina drops back down to a mile after winning the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh last time out. Jamie Spencer's mount is currently edging favouritism ahead of Nashwa, who will also be dropping back down to a mile for the first time since her juvenile days.

Defending champion Prosperous Voyage, who disappointed a little in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, will represent Ralph Beckett again. Ed Walker and Saffie Osbourne will team up with Random Harvest, who followed Rogue Millennium home in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes.

The three-year-old brigade will be led by another Ralph Beckett runner, Remarquee, who ran a stormer to finish second to Tahiyra in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Along with Nashwa, the Gosden's will also run impressive Britannia winner and fellow three-year-old, Coppice.

Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien team up with three-year-old Never Ending Story. Other July Festival runners include Pam Sly's stable star Astral Beau and Roger Varian's lightly-raced four-year-old Ameynah.

2023 Falmouth Stakes Tips

When a George Boughey horse gets on a roll, it can be very hard to halt its momentum and this looks like an excellent opportunity for VIA SISTINA to claim her second Group One win in the space of two weeks.

Jamie Spencer's mount made a mockery of the Dahlia Stakes on her reappearance, destroying a decent field with a devastating turn of foot. Runner-up Al Husn, who couldn't get within six lengths of and eased-down Via Sistina in the Dahlia, then came out and upset Nashwa to win the Hoppings Fillies Stakes at Newcastle next time out.

Boughey's raider produced another classy performance in the Pretty Polly Stakes and never looked in danger of being passed once she hit the front. Given how strongly she travels, I can't see this drop back in trip hindering the market leader and returning to Newmarket is a plus, considering Via Sistina has recorded two wins and a close second from her three starts over on the Rowley Mile.
