Champion Echo Zulu's Dogwood Victory Gives Sire Gun Runner Fifth Stakes Winner In One Day
Champion filly Echo Zulu won the $274,000 Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., by 5 lengths over Grade 1-placed Tarabi. It was the fillie's first start in 141 days after finishing fourth in the Longines Kentucky Oaks. She was a late scratch from the Acorn Stake on the June 11 Belmont Staking undercard due to a minor strain in her left front suspensory ligament. She won two races in a row during her championship campaign. Her trainer Steve Asmussen called her a champion.
Echo Zulu won the Dogwood Stakes. It was the fifth win in one day for Sire Gun Runner. Tarabi finished second. Steve Asmussen is grateful to his trainer, Ricardo Santana Jr., for getting his filly back to the winner's circle.
