G3 Dogwood Stakes: Echo Zulu Returns in Style
Echo Zulu won the $274,000 Dogwood Stakes (Grade III) at Churchill Downs by 5 lengths over Grade I-placed Tarabi. It was the champion filly's first start in 141 days. She was a late scratch for the Acorn on the June 11 Belmont Stake undercard due to a minor leg injury. She went more than nine weeks without a published workout. The horse won two races in a row. Her trainer Steve Asmussen is grateful she was able to get back to the winner's circle. He also won a one-turn victory in Spinaway (GI) and Frizette ( GI).
Ricardo Santana Jr., jockey, won the race with Echo Zulu. Steve Asmussen, trainer, had five stakes winners today and two Grade I wins. Javier Castellano, jockerer, Tarabi, finished second.
