Championship play-off final could be moved if Coventry upset Manchester United in FA Cup

The English Football League (EFL) has drawn up a contingency plan to hold the Championship play-off final on June 2 in case Coventry City reach the FA Cup final.

The play-off final is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 26, which comes the day after the FA Cup final.

Coventry reached the FA Cup semi-final with a 3-2 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday and are eighth in the Championship — four points behind sixth-placed Norwich City who occupy the final play-off spot — with nine matches remaining.

That means, in theory, Coventry could be down to play in both the Championship play-off final and FA Cup final — if they reach the play-offs and qualify for the final, as well as beating Manchester United in next month’s FA Cup semi-final.

The FA Cup semi-final schedule has not yet been finalised but the games will take place over the weekend of April 20-21. Chelsea face Manchester City in the other tie.

The Championship league season, meanwhile, concludes on May 4. The play-off semi-final dates will likely be confirmed once the regular season finishes.

It is as yet unclear at what stage the Championship play-off final would be moved if Coventry are successful in their endeavours for the rest of the season, but the June 2 contingency plan is in place for the game to be rescheduled. That would also see the Championship play-off final fall the day after the Champions League final, which will also be played at Wembley Stadium.

Coventry reached last season’s play-off final, where they were beaten on penalties by Luton Town.

Should Mark Robins’ side reach the FA Cup final, they would become the first Championship club to do so since Cardiff City in 2008.
