Villa to maintain stranglehold

Everton save some of their worst performances for Aston Villa, who look the best bet at Goodison Park in a battle between teams at either end of the Premier League.

The Toffees crashed to a 4-0 defeat at Villa Park in August and, although Everton turned the tables in a League Cup tie there a month later, the head-to-head league record since Villa were promoted in 2019 stands at seven wins and two draws for Villa in nine matches.

They haven’t conceded a goal on their previous three trips to Goodison and having done the double over Everton in each of the previous two seasons, expect them to complete the hat-trick this time.

Sean Dyche’s side have definitely lost their post-points deduction spark. They are on a five-match winless run in all competitions and have been dragged back into the thick of the relegation scrap. Their performances have also been inconsistent: they were excellent at Tottenham and unlucky to lose 2-1, but poor at Wolves where they could have lost by more than the 3-0 margin.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is available after having the red card he picked up in the FA Cup tie at Crystal Palace rescinded, but he has not scored since the end of October.

Their top scorer this season is Abdoulaye Doucoure and he has a hamstring issue, while Dwight McNeil is also missing. Everton have too thin a squad in terms of quality to be without those two.

All of which is music to Villa’s ears as they continue to chuck down a marker to Liverpool, Man City and the rest. No team has won more games this season than Unai Emery’s, and their confidence will be high after back-to-back wins over Burnley in the league and Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.

Hot-shot McGinn can strike again

John McGinn is enjoying his best goalscoring season and looks great value at 6/1 in the any-time scorer market.

The Scotland midfielder has banged in seven goals for Villa this term, with five in the league – including at home to Everton in August – plus a couple more for Scotland.

Playing in a more advanced midfield role in a team who swamp forward, McGinn is proving a handful to mark with a previously unseen eye for goal.

Luiz to put stamp on bet builder

Dyche’s sides are nothing if not fired up and you would expect the fouls and the cards to be flying at Goodison Park.

And few foul more consistently than Douglas Luiz, the anchorman in Villa’s midfield, who tops his side’s foul charts with 26 and will happily do whatever is required to break up attacks.

Luiz is 7/5 to commit two or more fouls so make that the first leg of a bet builder where leg two is both teams to score at 4/7.

Only Manchester City have scored more league goals than Villa this season while Everton average 16.1 shots per game at home, the seventh-highest tally conflicting with where they are in the table.

Everton and Villa have between them scored 18 goals from set-plays this term so know the value of winning corners. Make over 9.5 corners part three of a bet builder that works out at 5.15/1.

Everton vs Aston Villa tip 3: Bet builder - Douglas Luiz 2+ fouls, both teams to score, over 9.5 match corners @ 5.15/1 with Paddy Power
