Feyenoord the favourites
Celtic begin their Champions League Group E campaign with a trip to Rotterdam that will evoke memories of the only previous meeting between the clubs, which came in the 1970 European Cup final.
Feyenoord were victorious that night, denying Celtic what would have been a second European crown in four years, and they will be favourites to win again on Tuesday.
The Dutch club are playing in the group stage of Europe’s premier club competition for the first time since 2017-18, and go into the game in good form after winning their previous three matches in the Eredivisie 6-1, 5-1 and 6-1.
They will be without star striker Santiago Gimenez, who has already bagged six league goals this season but is serving a two-game suspension following his extra-time dismissal against Roma in last season’s Europa League quarter-final.
However, manager Arne Slot can call on the likes of Mats Wieffer and Yankuba Minteh, who is on loan from Newcastl. Both have already notched twice this season.
Celtic have scored 11 goals in six games this season so it’s reasonable to suggest they will at least get on the scoresheet in Rotterdam, but this could be another night that exposes just how far Scottish football has declined, certainly since the days when the Bhoys were genuine contenders.

Hosts can dominate both halves
Feyenoord have been in front at half-time in their previous three matches – indeed against Almere City and Heerenveen they had raced into 3-0 leads by the break – so this could be another game in which they are on top from the outset.
Celtic are used to dominating in Scotland but know when they head into European competition things become much more difficult and it would not be a surprise to see them behind at the break against a side likely to be set up to attack from the start.
That’s not to say the Bhoys won’t play their part in the clash too. Brendan Rodgers’ men also go into the game on the back of a good weekend win – 3-0 at home to Dundee – and they have the recent memory of a 1-0 Old Firm win at Rangers just before the international break to inspire them.
