Things just weren’t working out for Darren Moore as Huddersfield manager but caretaker Jon Worthington has certainly made an impression during his two-game stint in the dugout. A 4-0 win over local rivals and fellow relegation contenders Sheffield Wednesday was followed by an epic 5-3 away loss at an unstoppable Southampton, giving them an almighty scare in the process.
They’re definitely more front-foot in their approach and seven goals in two games proves that. Worthington will continue with the counter attacking style when Sunderland visit, a side that plays a patient passing game from the back. The Terriers’ high tempo game could force an early error and against Michael Beale’s side, who themselves have won only once on the road since the start of October.
Both teams are amongst the seemingly never-ending cluster of clubs hoping to be a part of the end of season play-offs in the Championship. Preston got back on track by winning back-to-back games, whilst Middlesbrough are simply struggling for consistency. Whilst three points are very much on the agenda of the two managers, it could still be quite a cagey affair, especially early on in proceedings.
Only Coventry have scored a higher percentage of their league goals this season in the second half of games than Boro, so Michael Carrick will look to make his side hard to beat initially, particularly away from home in this big game. Preston have only been ahead on three occasions at half-time in their home contests, so this has to makings of a second-half shootout at Deepdale.
After Steven Schumacher oversaw an unbeaten five-match league run at the beginning of his tenure as Stoke manager, he has now seen his side lose four in a row to really raise fears of relegation into League One. The fans clearly felt that way too during and after their weekend loss to Blackburn, who had been winless in eight Championship fixtures beforehand.
Next up is another huge battle at the bottom of the league as QPR are the visitors, a club that currently occupies a relegation spot, but are in good form and would leapfrog Stoke with three points. The form guide over the last five games would have QPR knocking on the door of the play-offs, whilst Schumacher’s men would be in the drop zone.
It is hard to recommended Stoke at present, and there is value on Martí Cifuentes’ QPR to get something here, or at the very, very least be competitive. I think there’s value in QPR (+1).
A sequence of one victory in nine league outings for Ipswich has certainly seen their automatic promotion push stumble, so much so they have gone from sitting comfortable in second place to now being four points behind the top-two heading into this round of fixtures. However, the dream of Premier League football remains a serious prospect, and perhaps facing an out-of-sorts Millwall right now could be just the game to try and build back some momentum.
It is six without victory for Millwall in all competitions, which includes five defeats. They have all mostly been tight games, but they do perhaps surprisingly possess one of the worst home records in the league, whereas only Leicester and Southampton have achieved more away points than The Tractor Boys.
One of many reasons for Ipswich’s success this season is the contribution of forward Conor Chaplin, who has nine Championship goals to his name. He is rarely left out of the starting eleven by manager Kieran McKenna and did score when these two sides last met in November.
With Millwall fielding three powerful centre backs then it is that area just outside that box, where Chaplin often takes up, that may see him find pockets of space to shoot or make handy runs from deep into the box. With the threat coming from a number of directions I fancy Chaplin to Score Anytime.
