Golf betting tips: BMW PGA Championship and Fortinet Championship

Belfast Telegraph

The DP World Tour stops off at Wentworth this week for the BMW PGA Championship – the flagship event on this side of the Pond – while on the PGA Tour, the Fortinet Championship is the main draw.

Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland are just three names in a star-studded field in Surrey, while Max Homa and Justin Thomas are the biggest pulls on at Silverado Country Club, California.

The Fortinet Championship is the opener in a seven-tournament stretch of the FedEx Cup Fall series, which will determine the top 125 players in the standings for the 2024 season.

Horschel at home in Surrey

Wentworth has proved a happy hunting ground for American ace Billy Horschel, who was fourth on his debut here in 2019 before returning two years later to claim a one-shot victory.

The 36-year-old finished a respectable ninth on his title defence in a tournament that was reduced to 54 holes and he returns here on the back of some promising form in the States.

Horschel was T13 at the 3M Open and fourth at the Wyndham Championship before he came to The K Club last week for the Irish Open and finished T45 in after a disappointing back nine on Sunday.

Those dropped shots after the turn can be forgiven, though, and the American is a dangerous contender this week at a course for which he has a clear liking.

Tip: Outright winner – Billy Horschel @ 28/1 with bet365

Hojgaard on a high

Appearing for the first time since being named in Europe’s 2023 Ryder Cup team, Nicolai Hojgaard will be looking to keep the momentum going on his third crack at this tournament.

Wentworth is a course that demands a strong tee-to-green game so it makes sense to side with the powerful Dane, who leads in strokes gained in that department on the DP World Tour.

The 22-year-old, who is also third in greens in regulation, has recorded top-five finishes on his last two starts and another strong effort is expected.

Tip: Outright winner – Nicolai Hojgaard @ 45/1 with bet365

Renaissance on cards for Molinari?

It has been a difficult few years for Francesco Molinari, who has not tasted success since the 2019 Players Championship, but he showed signs of life last time out when T31 at the Czech Masters.

The Italian has a rich history at Wentworth, winning in 2018 to go along with two top-five and four top-10 finishes, and a 17th outing in Virginia Water has the potential to spark a revival in him.

Tip: Outright winner - Francesco Molinari @ 160/1 with bet365

Noren has outside chance

Max Homa and Justin Thomas aside, this is quite a weak-looking field on paper and there looks to be plenty of value in the betting, with Alex Noren a tempting selection at 45/1.

The Swede may not be the force he was a few years ago but he should have more than enough to challenge for the victory this week and his recent results make for positive reading.

Noren was T23 at The Open, his best major finish since 2020, and he followed that effort with a share of 13th at the 3M Open on the PGA Tour. If he can replicate that kind of form, he can be in the mix.

Tip: Outright winner – Alex Noren @ 45/1 with bet365

Taylor can sew up victory

American Taylor Montgomery has enjoyed a solid season as he qualified for the FedEx Cup play-offs, only missing out on a spot at the BMW Championship by three places.

The 28-year-old was third on his debut here last year, ending up three shots behind champion Homa, and his ranking of second in strokes gained: putting on the PGA Tour could give him the edge if his long game holds up.

Tip: Outright winner – Taylor Montgomery @ 40/1 with bet365

Reavie can get in the mix

Chez Reavie has had 13 cracks at winning the Fortinet Championship and although he has yet to accomplish that, he has produced some decent efforts with a third in 2020 his best result.

The American’s approach play has been solid this season, as he ranks 36th in strokes gained in that category, and he showed promise on his latest start when T27 at the Wyndham Championship.

Tip: Outright winner - Chez Reavie @ 50/1 with bet365
