Greg Polson's Newcastle and Wagga Tips: $3.70 best bet at Newcastle

Form analyst Greg Polson is keen to get stuck into Thursday's meetings at Newcastle and Wagga

NEWCASTLE

Best Bet: Race 6 (3) Time Raid

It's over a year since the Con Karakatsanis-trained Time Raid last saluted but gee he looks to be in a winnable race on Thursday. His best form is in the distance range, and he gets to a distance above 1800m for the first time since a close second at Canterbury earlier in the preparation and makes his own luck on speed from a good gate. Time Raid gets his chance to return to the winner's stall.

Next Best: Race 4 (3) Hayatti

Blinkers on for the first time looks the catalyst for the Brad Widdup-trained Hayatti to go one better at Newcastle Thursday. A three-year-old son of Wandjina, Hayatti was narrowly beaten at Nowra on debut after racing wide without cover on speed and still managed to produce a 600m-200m sectional split which was top three for the day, there was a two-length margin to the third horse so plenty of merit in the debut performance. With the run under his belt expecting Hayatti to head back to the winner's stall for the first time.

Value Bet: Race 8 (10) Amnesty

The Brothers Waugh filly Amnesty will be resuming having her first start for Annabel Neasham and would only need to be close to right to handle her rivals. Amnesty was a Mornington winner on debut in two starts for Cliff Brown and nothing wrong with her two lead up trials for the new stable. Expecting Amnesty to park right behind the speed in the 900m scamper and prove too strong for her rivals in the straight.

WAGGA

Best Bet: Race 1 (1) Flying Trapeze

Natural improvement second up from a break should see the Gary Portelli-trained Flying Trapeze win the opener on Day 1 of the Wagga Cup Carnival. A two-year-old son of Trapeze Artist, Flying Trapeze resumed in the Silver Apple at Orange finishing third producing a top four last 400m of the day and looked to be open to improvement. Senior jockey Alysha Collett takes over from an apprentice and expecting Flying Trapeze to get the money.

Next Best: Race 2 (1) Australian Harbour

Some market support as the day progresses would add confidence however the UK import Australian Harbour finds himself in a winnable maiden having his first start for Tim Donnelly. Placed in four of his seven starts Australian Harbour hasn't trialled however the Danny Beasley booking looks a lead and happy to be on board unless the betting tells me otherwise.

Value Bet: Race 7 (2) Art Cadeau

Expecting the Terry Robinson-trained Art Cadeau to test the early favourite Front Page to the limit when the now six-year-old resumes in the Wagga Town Plate. Art Cadeau invariably races well on the fresh side. The gelding missed a place first up for the first time in his career in the Kosciuszko fresh last preparation and had genuine excuses that day finishing the race lame. Two preparations back Art Cadeau finished third in the Group III Star Kingdom Stakes at Newcastle first up and three campaigns back won the 2021 Kosciuszko. That's exceptional fresh form and happy to take the punt on Art Cadeau first up at the $8.50 available after scratchings.
