Los Angeles Angels vs Cincinnati Reds Prediction 8-23-23 MLB Picks

The Cincinnati Reds and the Los Angeles Angels meet Wednesday in MLB doubleheader action from Angel Stadium. These will be the second and final installments in a three-game series after some schedule shuffling due to the recent weather. On Tuesday in the opener, the Reds were able to eke out a close victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Cincinnati Reds

The Reds had some trouble with the Blue Jays over the weekend, ultimately falling in two of three games. In Sunday’s 10-3 defeat Cincinnati got a solo homer from Tyler Stephenson as the only RBI. On Tuesday the Reds came back from a 3-1 deficit and ended up winning 4-3. Matt McLain had a solo home run, and Spencer Steer had an RBI on a 1-for-3 evening.

In the starter slot for game one Wednesday Cincinnati is going with Andrew Abbott. This year Abbott is 8-3 with a 2.99 ERA and 88 Ks. In game two the Reds didn’t immediately announce a name.

Cincinnati Reds Team Facts

  • The Reds have won 11 of their last 12 road games against teams that held a losing record.
  • The Reds have covered the run line in each of their last five night games against AL West opponents.

Los Angeles Angels

Over on the Angels’ side, they were only able to win one of three games versus the Rays over the weekend, which includes an 18-4 blowout loss in game two of the Saturday doubleheader. On Tuesday versus Cincinnati, all of Los Angeles’ scoring was done via home run. Brandon Drury, Mike Moustakas and Logan O’Hoppe each went long in the losing effort.

As starting pitcher in game one Wednesday, LA will send out Shohei Ohtani. So far Ohtani is 10-5 with a 3.17 ERA and 165 strikeouts. Reid Detmers will take game two duties. Detmers is 3-9 with a 4.93 ERA and 136 Ks to his name this year.

ANDREW’S GAME 1 PICK

I’m staying with the Angels in game one. Anytime Ohtani is on the mound, LA is a good bet. Over his last three outings Ohtani has zero earned runs on seven hits and seven walks in 19.0 total innings. He’s 2-0 in that time. Abbott is doing pretty well lately also; he’s got four earned in his last 10.2 innings. I like LA to eke out a victory after a starters’ duel, though.

ANDREW’S GAME 2 PICK

I’ll lean toward the Angels again in game two, but I’m probably not touching this one. The good news is that Detmers is coming off a great outing with 7.1 clean innings in a win over Texas. The bad news is that he had 14 earned runs in 6.1 innings over two starts before that. I don’t necessarily trust Detmers right now, but there’s a decent chance he can post another strong start and put LA in a winning position.
