Free-scoring Dortmund primed for United test

Manchester United conclude a mixed US tour with a clash against German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund in Nevada.

The dangers of reading too much into a summer series of friendlies is abundantly obvious. But if we have learnt anything over the past couple of weeks, it is to beware a wounded Dortmund.

Mighty Borussia were left heartbroken at blowing their title quest on the final day of the Bundesliga season but look like they already mean business.

They have been winning games and scoring goals in abundance throughout July, which suggests boss Edin Terzic has got his machine nicely oiled – and Manchester United may well feel the full force of Dortmund’s destructive powers.

This is the final leg of the Red Devils’ four-match American tour, a visit that began nicely with a well-deserved triumph over Arsenal but was followed by defeats to Wrexham (with a much-changed and youthful side, so largely irrelevant as a form guide) and Real Madrid.

Jude Bellingham, Dortmund’s big-money summer departure, was among the goals as Los Blancos flexed their muscles.

Borussia, meanwhile, have played three friendlies in Germany, clocking up three wins and 12 goals, before heading for California where they thrashed Nate Miller’s San Diego Loyal 6-0.

United will be a far sterner test than the Pacific coast outfit, but offence-minded Dortmund can land some punches and look the value for a 90-minute bet.

Bet on goals in Vegas showdown

With so much explosive attacking intent available to both managers, expect plenty of goals in Las Vegas.

Marco Reus made it four in three games with his strike against the Loyal while Paul-Philipp Besong has netted three times over the summer.

And Dortmund look an entirely different proposition when Sebastian Haller leads the line. The former West Ham man is back to his goalscoring best after surgery.

As for Manchester United, ignore the disappointments of Jadon Sancho and Antony and focus instead on the quality coming from the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and, of course, new boy Mason Mount, whose career may well take off after leaving Chelsea.

You would expect a flurry of scoring, especially with countless abundant substitutions, changes of shape and, basically, because Dortmund’s games are generally full of goals. Over 3.5 is 5/4 and looks perfectly acceptable.

Magnificent Mount can show his worth

If there is a bet builder to be constructed from this match, then over 3.5 goals looks like the obvious starting point.

Dortmund’s four summer games so far have produced 21 goals and last season in the Bundesliga their fixtures averaged 3.74 a time.

It takes two to tango, but United have got enough of their own quality to ensure these two pile up the chances and, hopefully, the goals as well.

There are plenty of contenders for anytime scorer – and Mount, definitely getting plenty of pitch time as boss Erik ten Hag figures out how best to deploy the England man, is taken to be one of them.
