Masters 2023 predictions, golf odds, picks, props: Betting insider backing Scottie Scheffler to repeat

cbssports.com

Scottie Scheffler has a green jacket, but Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy will try to earn their first when the 2023 Masters tees off Thursday, April 6 at Augusta National Golf Club. Scheffler beat runner-up McIlroy by three strokes last year for his first major championship. At the Masters 2023, McIlroy will make his ninth attempt to complete his career grand slam, while Rahm won his first major trophy at the 2021 U.S. Open. Those three have been battling for the world's No. 1 ranking all season, with Scheffler rising to the top with his victory at the Players two weeks ago. Tiger Woods, who has 15 major championships, also is expected to be in the 2023 Masters field.

Scheffler is the 8-1 second favorite, just behind Rahm (15-2) and ahead of McIlroy (17-2), in the 2023 Masters odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Nine 2023 Masters golfers are 20-1 or shorter. They include Cameron Smith (12-1), 2015 Masters champion Jordan Spieth (15-1) and two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas (16-1). Before locking in any 2023 Masters picks or golf predictions, you need to see what proven golf betting expert Patrick McDonald has to say, considering his recent track record.

McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour. He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and is having a profitable 2022-23 season. McDonald is up almost 17 units this season, meaning a haul of nearly $1,700 for $100 bettors. He is having a profitable season in both outright picks and head-to-head matchups.

McDonald nailed the Farmers Insurance Open, backing Homa (25-1) as his top choice. He hit another 25-1 shot at the Houston Open, taking Tony Finau to win, and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on his outrights, including a monster 250-1 payout on Hudson Swafford at The American Express. Anyone who follows McDonald's advice has been cashing in.

Now, McDonald has focused his attention on the 2023 Masters field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can see them here.

Top 2023 Masters expert picks

One stunning prediction from McDonald: He is fading Viktor Hovland, even though the Norwegian recently tied for third at the Players Championship. The 25-year-old finished seven strokes back at Sawgrass, another of many golf tournaments in which he posted a strong finish but didn't contend. He has eight top-25s in nine outings, four of those in the top 10, but his last victory came in November 2021.

Hovland is one of the tour's best from tee to green, but has struggled around the green (164th strokes gained) and putting (84th), which can mean trouble at Augusta. See who else to fade here.

On the other hand, McDonald says "Scottie Scheffler should have a legitimate claim to another green jacket." The world No. 1 won the Phoenix Open for the second straight year last month and tied for fourth in his defense of last year's Arnold Palmer title.

In fact, Scheffler has finished 12th or better in eight straight tournaments, going 118-under par over that run. His ball-striking (first in greens in regulation) and play off the tee (third in total driving) have been among the best on tour all year. See who else to back here.
