Masters 2023 predictions, golf odds, top picks, props: Betting insider eyeing Scottie Scheffler to repeat

Jon Rahm will aim for his fourth victory of the season when he competes at Augusta National Golf Club at the 2023 Masters, which begins on Thursday, April 6 with Round 1. The 28-year-old Spaniard increased his victory total on the PGA Tour to 10 by winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions, American Express and Genesis Invitational this year. Rahm posted top-10 finishes at the Masters four straight times before tying for 27th place last year. He is 8-1 in the latest 2023 Masters odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while reigning champion Scottie Scheffler is the 13-2 favorite.

Rory McIlroy, who was last year's runner-up, is 15-2, while 2015 winner Jordan Spieth and Cameron Smith round out the top five 2023 Masters contenders at 14-1. Before locking in any 2023 Masters picks or golf predictions, you need to see what proven golf betting expert Patrick McDonald has to say, considering his recent track record.

McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour. He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and is having a profitable 2022-23 season. McDonald is up almost 17 units this season, meaning a haul of nearly $1,700 for $100 bettors. He is having a profitable season in both outright picks and head-to-head matchups.

McDonald nailed the Farmers Insurance Open, backing Homa (25-1) as his top choice. He hit another 25-1 shot at the Houston Open, taking Tony Finau to win, and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on his outrights, including a monster 250-1 payout on Hudson Swafford at The American Express. Anyone who follows McDonald's advice has been cashing in.

Now, McDonald has focused his attention on the 2023 Masters field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can see them here.

Top 2023 Masters expert picks

One stunning prediction from McDonald: He is fading Viktor Hovland, even though the Norwegian recently tied for third at the Players Championship. Hovland's final round of the event was his best, as he shot a four-under, but he never contended for the title, finishing seven strokes behind tournament winner Scottie Scheffler.

It was the 25-year-old Hovland's fourth top-10 finish of the season, but he has not recorded a victory on the PGA Tour since winning the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba in November 2021. He has struggled around the green this campaign, as he is 164th in total strokes gained and 79th in putting, which concerns McDonald. See who else to fade here.

On the other hand, McDonald says "Scottie Scheffler should have a legitimate claim to another green jacket." After finishing 19th and 18th in his first two appearances in the Masters, the 26-year-old carried a three-stroke lead into the final round last year and maintained it to win his first major.

Scheffler has been strong thus far this season, finishing 12th or better in eight straight tournaments, winning two of them. The New Jersey native is superb off the tee and he is first among all golfers in strokes gained off-the-tee, strokes gained tee-to-green and ball-striking. He also has been the best in greens in regulation percentage and ranks second in scoring average and total strokes gained. See who else to back here.
