Masters Green Jacket: Why Does The Winner Get A Green Jacket?

The iconic Masters Green Jacket is presented every year to the winner of the tournament, but when did this tradition begin and why? We’re taking a look at the history of the Green Jacket.

Immediately after the Masters is won, the winner is presented with the Masters Green Jacket. That jacket is borrowed off an Augusta National member with roughly the same build as the winner, before the champion is later measured for their own personally tailored version.

With the 2023 Masters just around the corner, we’re taking a look at the history of the famous Masters Green Jacket.

Masters Green Jacket History

The Masters Green Jacket was first introduced all the way back in 1937. Augusta National Golf Club members began wearing the jackets, with the idea that wearing them meant that members were easily identifiable, so they could answer questions from non-members.

The Green Jacket is reserved for Augusta National members only, and golfers who win the Masters. Jackets are kept on club grounds, and it is forbidden to take them off the premises. However, there is an exception for the winner, who can take it home and return it to the club the following year.

A golfer wearing the iconic garment has achieved something special – a victory at Augusta National Golf Club.

The Green Jacket is presented to the new Masters champion in the Butler Cabin. This is where the previous the previous year’s winner presents the jacket to the new champion, and in the case of a repeat winner the Masters chairman presents the jacket.

If any of the amateurs make the cut, the player who finishes the highest will also be in attendance and will be awarded with the trophy for low amateur – one of many trophies awarded at The Masters.

The Chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club, Fred Ridley, presides over the ceremony.

The Masters winner is also given a small trophy, but it is the Green Jacket that is really the coveted item amongst professional golfers. Being able to attend the Masters Champions Dinner each year is something nobody can ever take away from you if you win The Masters.
