Seattle Mariners

The Mariners had a lead going into the ninth in Monday’s opener but ended losing 4-3 in 10 innings. Tom Murphy had a solo homer in the loss, and JP Crawford added a pair of hits. In Tuesday’s matchup Seattle scored seven runs across the final two innings in a 9-7 victory. Julio Rodriguez managed two homers with three RBI, and Cade Marlowe hit a solo shot with two runs.

In the starter role Wednesday the Mariners will send out Bryce Miller. This year Miller is 6-3 with a 3.50 ERA and 64 Ks in 69.1 innings. Miller is fresh off a no-decision versus the Blue Jays with 5.1 innings and one earned run.

Minnesota Twins

Over on the Minnesota side, they got three hits, a run and an RBI from Max Kepler in Monday’s victory, while five other players each contributed one hit. In game two the Twins’ Matt Wallner posted a two-run homer and Max Kepler scored two runs. The pitching staff gave up 10 hits in the loss, however.

Joe Ryan will start the game for the Twins on Wednesday. In his 20 starts so far Ryan is 9-6 with a 3.88 ERA and 141 Ks in 118.1 innings. Ryan beat the White Sox in his last start, tossing four earned on seven hits and a walk in 6.0 frames.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll stick with the Mariners here. Miller is doing well over his two starts in July. In that pair Miller has just one earned run on eight hits and three walks in 10.1 innings. As for Ryan, he’s been a little wild lately with 12 earned over his last 15.2 innings of work. The Mariners should have some early opportunities for baserunners while he’s out there. In the Tuesday matchup Seattle really got things going in the later innings after a rough start from George Kirby (4.0 innings; five earned). The bullpen held things together on a combined 5.0 innings, one hit, two earned, four walks and nine strikeouts, but Seattle used a lot of arms along the way. Still, I think the Mariners pull it together and take the win in this competitive series.
