Tigers vs. Yankees: Odds, picks and predictions 8/30/23

The Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees play tonight at Comerica Park in the third of four games in the Motor City this week. The Tigers are on a four-game losing streak. New York has found its home run swing again, hammering five homers in the first two games of this series.

The Tigers plan a bullpen game for Wednesday, so expect a slew of relief pitchers to march to the mound to face the Yankees. It’s possible this game could be lone-scoring as a result, because the Yankees lineup will not see the same pitcher twice for a few innings.

TBD vs. Gerrit Cole (11-4, 2.95 ERA, 181 K in 168 IP)

The Tigers draw the task of facing arguably the best pitcher in the American League, the Yankees’ ace, Gerrit Cole. This fact alone shifts the moneyline odds heavily in favor of the Yankees at -210. But that means you could jump on the Tigers at a price of +176.

Cole will have much to say about the outcome of Wednesday night’s game. The righthander leads the league in ERA, is third in strikeouts, and also paces the league in innings pitched. His stuff has been electric this season, but August has been a tough month for Cole, and Detroit can see some cracks in his armor.

The toughest pitch to lay off from Cole is the high “rising” four-seam fastball, which he likes to feed to right handed batters. That means Spencer Torkelson, Javier Báez, and MIguel Cabrera will see it a lot. But, otherwise, Cole has been seeing hard-hit contact on his secondary pitches. The Tigers struck out 10 times on Tuesday, and the offense has only scored nine runs in its last four games.

The Tigers do not have a listed starting pitcher yet, as of the time this story was submitted on Wednesday morning. That’s because manager A.J. Hinch was waiting to see how Matt Manning was feeling after throwing his bullpen session earlier this week. Reportedly, Manning will start Thursday’s game, which means someone else will be tapped to toe the rubber tonight.

The most likely candidate to start Wednesday’s game is Joey Wentz, except that isn’t at all confirmed. Wentz has not pitched for Detroit since August 18. It’s possible a true reliever (Brendan White or even Will Vest, who tossed an inning Tuesday), could be used as an opener. However Hinch does it, tonight’s game will feature many Tigers pitchers, with Wentz likely the second man to the mound.

  • After the loss as a favorite on Tuesday, the Tigers are 13-10 as a favorite this season.
  • The Total has gone UNDER in 7 of Detroit’s last 10 games.
  • The Yankees are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 games.

Detroit Tigers -1.5 To Win on a Tri-Bet (+320 from FanDuel MI)

A tri-bet is a special bet that provides odds for one of three outcomes: Team A to win by X runs, Team B to win by X runs, or either Team to win by X runs. FanDuel is offering +320 on Detroit winning by at least two runs. Given the four-game losing streak, it seems time for the Tigers to bounce out of its hitting funk and record a win. If it’s by two or more, our $100 bet wins $320.
