NCAAM Breakdown: Purdue, UConn Setting Pace

Purdue is now the top-ranked team in the men's basketball national polls. Houston suffered its first loss of the season last week. UConn is second with 21 first-place votes. There is only one game this week between ranked teams, with No. 22 Miami playing host to sixth-placed Virginia.

The fourth-ranked Jayhawks are 10-1 with an average margin of victory of 28 points. They beat Seton Hall and Missouri, but their most impressive win was 84-62 over Indiana. Grady Dick had his third 20-point game of the season.

Zach Edey is averaging 23.5 points and 18.3 points in the last four games for No. 1 Purdue. Edy is 23 of 33 from the field over the past three games. He is the betting favorite for the national player of the year.

Zach Edey is the first player since Blake Griffin in 2008 to reach those totals in a 4-game span.

Houston is ranked No. 3 in the national polls after beating Alabama 69-61. The Cougars will play McNeese State on Wednesday and then play American Athletic Conference games with Tulsa and UCF.

There are five undefeated teams left in Division I basketball. Mississippi State is the only one with a perfect record. New Mexico is 11-0 and Utah State 9-1. UConn is undefeated and has the best record against the spread this season. California is yet to win a game this year. The Golden Bears lost to Eastern Washington 50-48.

Virginia Tech beat North Carolina 80-72 in December. NorthCarolina won the CBS Sports Classic 89-84. Pete Nance's buzzer-beating basket sent the game into overtime.

UCLA won both games against ranked teams. The first one was in Maryland, the second one in the CBS Sports Classic. The Bruins are now ranked 13th.

Drew Timme had 29 points and 10 rebounds in Gonzaga's 100-90 win over Alabama in the C.M. Newton Classic.

Virginia Cavaliers and Miami Hurricanes are playing each other on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET. Miami recently won a 107-105 thriller against Cornell. Virginia is coming off a 69-61 loss to Houston.
