America’s underdog darlings, the Detroit Lions, visit the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night in an intriguing NFC Championship Game. Kickoff from Levi’s Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

Detroit (14-5) is only one win from booking its first Super Bowl appearance and is playing in the NFC title game for only the second time in franchise history.

The NFC’s third-seeded Lions beat the sixth-seeded Los Angeles Rams (24-23) and fourth-seeded Tampa Bay Buccaneers (31-23) to advance. Quarterback Jared Goff led the way, completing 74.3 percent of his passes for 564 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

However, the Lions’ defense remains a big concern after surrendering 46 points and 833 yards, including 676 passing, combined in the two wins.

And now they’re taking a significant step up on the road against a battle-tested San Francisco team playing in its fourth NFC Championship Game in the last five seasons.

The 49ers (13-5) finished the 2023 regular season ranked third in both scoring offense (28.9 points per game) and defense (17.5) and boasted a league-most nine Pro Bowl selections. San Francisco also has already beaten each of the other five NFC playoff qualifiers, winning by an average of 15.6 points.

Second-year QB Brock Purdy and the Niners did struggle, though, in getting past the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers, 24-21 in the divisional round, and that gives the Lions and their backing bettors hope.

The 49ers are consensus 7.5-point favorites (-350 moneyline) with the game total creeping up to 51.5 points.

With the other three units in this game all ranking in the league’s top five, the Lions’ defense (23rd in points allowed at 23.2 per outing) is the glaring weak link in this matchup.

Detroit’s diminished track record on the road — averaging almost six points fewer than at home — also is a concern as the Lions will be playing outdoors Sunday night for only the second time since Oct. 22.

The 49ers, though, do have a key injury question mark surrounding do-it-all WR Deebo Samuel’s shoulder.

And, in any case they’ll need to play better than they did in scraping by the Packers.

The gut feeling is that the seasoned Niners will and will cover Sunday after having gotten a sub-par playoff performance out of the way.

Purdy is coming off one of his least-efficient aerial outings of the season, completing 59 percent of his 39 passes and averaging only 6.5 yards per attempt in his 252-yard outing against the Packers.

But that was in the rain against a more-formidable defense.

Sunday’s forecast calls for warmer temperatures, very-light winds and less than a 10 percent chance of precipitation.

Purdy’s promising outlook against one of the league’s worst passing defenses, though, is why we really like the over here.

The Lions permitted the league’s fourth-most passing yards (268.4 per game) to opposing QBs during the regular season and then were lit up by Matthew Stafford (367 yards, 2 TDs) and Baker Mayfield (349, 3) in their two playoff wins.
