Orioles vs. Diamondbacks prediction and odds for Sunday, Sept. 3 (Zac Gallen Day)

Yesterday, the Baltimore Orioles took a 7-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks to even the series at a game apiece. Now, the 84-51 O’s will send Jack Flaherty to the mound and the 70-66 Diamondbacks will counter with Zac Gallen.

Flaherty has made 24 starts this year and is 8-8 with a 4.73 ERA while Gallen is the favorite for the National League Cy Young Award and is 14-6 with a 3.32 ERA.

The O’s are protecting a lead in the AL East and the Diamondbacks are in a crowded race for the final NL Wild Card spot.

The Orioles wanted an ace when they traded for Jack Flaherty, but they have not gotten one. In his four starts with Baltimore, Flaherty has a 6.41 ERA and is walking 4.12 batters per nine innings. He has also allowed three home runs. Flaherty has had a disappointing season and a strong finish for his new team would salvage it, but that really doesn’t look to be in the cards for the former Cardinal.

Zac Gallen on the other side is having a very special season. However, last time out he was downright awful. Gallen allowed four home runs to the Dodgers and six runs over 5.1 innings. His ERA rose to 3.32, but his xERA is still much higher at 4.16. Regardless of a shaky xERA and one bad outing, I still believe in Gallen and I expect a huge bounce back today. By run value, his fastball is the best pitch in the MLB.

I really think there isn’t much more analysis needed than Zac Gallen is taking the mound. I trust him to deliver a win in the rubber match.
