Pirates vs Giants Prediction

The Pittsburgh Pirates will head out to the Bay to face the San Francisco Giants for game one of their three-game set from Oracle Park.

Pirates Betting Preview

Pittsburgh comes in at 26-26 after dropping two of three to Seattle. The Pirates lost their seventh straight series this month, and they’ve erased a hot start to the 2023 campaign. The Pittsburgh offense is scoring 3.95 runs per game, while batting .244, with a .322 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.82 ERA, with a 1.30 WHIP. Bryan Reynolds produced four runs in the game one victory over Seattle, and he leads the Pirates in BA (.287) and RBI (32). Carlos Santana homered in the same contest, and he’s second on the team at 24 RBI. Andrew McCutchen also went yard in the lone win, and he leads the Bucs in home runs (8), with 20 RBI.

Rich Hill (4-4, 5.57 ERA, 15 Ks) will pitch for Pittsburgh. The ageless wonder had a tough time with the high octane Rangers last week, allowing five runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Hill did manage to toss a season-high nine strikeouts, and he’s cleared seven Ks in four of his last seven starts.

Giants Betting Preview

San Francisco comes in at 27-26 after taking three of four from Milwaukee. The Giants had a successful stint in the midwest last week, humbling the Brew Crew, while also winning two of three games against Minnesota, and they’ll look to close the month strong here at Oracle. The San Francisco offense is scoring 4.81 runs per game, while batting .245, with a .317 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.97 ERA, with a 1.29 WHIP. Mike Conforto has produced a run in five of the last seven games, and he leads the team in HR (11), with 27 RBI. J.D. Davis homered in the game two victory, and he’s up to a team-high 29 RBI. Lamonte Wade Jr. has recorded a hit in five of the last six games.

Anthony DeSclafani (3-4, 3.43 ERA, 21 Ks) will make the start for San Francisco. The tenth-year righty has cooled off a bit after a fast start in April, and he suffered his fourth loss of the season last week in Minnesota, being on the hook for seven runs through five innings pitched. Six of DeSclafani’s first seven outings were quality starts, but three of his last four have resulted in losing decisions.

Pittsburgh vs San Francisco Trends

Pittsburgh is 27-25 against the spread this season, with a 24-26-2 O/U record. San Francisco is 27-26 ATS this year, with a 24-27-2 over/under record.

Corey’s Free Pick

When I view this matchup Barry Bonds playing for both franchises crosses my mind, and the team he experienced more success with  comes into a manageable spot this week. San Francisco and Pittsburgh have flipped scripts this month, as the Giants have cleaned up on a slow start with steady play in May, while the Pirates have watched their fast start disappear due to inconsistency. We could be in for more of the same in the Bay, and with a naturally vulnerable Rich Hill set to go for the Bucs, I think San Francisco keeps rolling here with another victory. Back the Giants for game one, and give the Under a look as well.
